C-10 Wednesday, September 26, 2018 The Press-Dispatch EAST GIBSON NEWS Submit school news: Email: egnews@ pressdispatch.net Deadline: Noon on Friday By Kenzie Rudolph Twin sisters, Ashton and Adison Stone, ruled home- coming at Wood Memorial, winning Queen and Maid of Honor for the senior class. This is probably the first time that twin sisters have gotten to share this moment together on the same court. The girls wanted to be on separate homecoming courts, Adison in the fall and Ashton for winter, but the voting did not end up that way. Ashton kept telling their peers to vote for Adi- son and not her, but the stu- dents seemed to want both of them on the court. Junior year, they were on separate homecoming courts, Adi- son on winter and Ashton on fall. When it came down to who won, neither girl knew who would take the crown. They thought the oth- er girls had good shots as well. When Adison's name was announced for Maid of Honor, Ashton was sur- prised, thinking that her sister would have been the winner. When Ashton's name was called for Queen, apparently her face showed her surprise. Adison said, "When I got Maid of Honor, I was like 'Oh I think Ashton got Queen'" and Ashton replied with "Oh that was not me! " because she did not think that she was going to come out on top. When it came to the vot- ing for homecoming, Adison said, "A lot of people were like, 'Oh I don't know who to vote for, you both are so great,' and I was like 'Don't say that to me, just vote for who you want to vote for.'" Ashton added, "It's cool that I won. I wanted to win, maybe not this one, but I still wanted to win in gener- al...I think it was really cool to be with her, and all of the pictures we got to take and everything, and that's going to be in the newspaper and in the yearbook, and stuff forever." Both Stone girls agree that the homecoming win- ner could have definitely been a toss up. Mother and teacher at Wood Memorial Kelly Carl- ton said, "They each have their own strengths, so honestly, my first thought whenever I heard they were on the same court was, 'Oh that's neat,' and then I thought 'Oh, somebody's gonna win and...' but they just aren't like that. I'm not saying they don't have ri- valry....they even each oth- er out." The twins are more to- gether than they are apart. They both play volleyball and tennis, they find them- selves on the same academ- ic teams, and when Adison will be on the basketball court this winter, Ashton will be managing the team. They are also in Peers to- gether. Adison is the se- nior class vice-president, and Ashton is right by her side as part of the student council. Adison is in the National Honor Society on her own, and she went to Hoosier Girls' State. When Ashton was home while Adison was gone for five days at Hoosier Girls' State, Ashton said that she Continued on page 12 Oakland City Elementary Francisco Elementary Above: Shiv Patel learning how to play the scoop game in kindergarten P.E. He attended college at In- diana State, University of Southern Indiana and Web- ster. Wilson did not teach until he was 28 years old. When he first entered the work- force, he worked in the transportation industry for a company called Airborne Express, who paid for his school tuition. He decided that he still wanted to teach, so he went back to get his credentials, working second shift while student teaching in the day time. Social studies was what Wilson was interested in, so he did some investigat- ing and learned that South Spencer was going to have a spot open in that area of study. He tried to get placed there for his student teach- ing. It all worked out, and he got the social studies teach- ing position the next year. Before coming to East Gibson, he was at South Spencer 17 years as a teach- er, assistant principal and principal. He also worked in Daviess County, Ky., for one year as director of student services, and then he went to EVSC for three years as chief leadership strategist, working with the five most under-performing schools. Wilson said, "I felt like my strength was at the building. I missed my students, kind of wanted to get back to that, so I applied for principalship here when I saw it was open, and I was lucky enough to be chosen as the principal." He has been happy with his transition to Wood Me- morial, and he especially en- joys the hard-working staff. When it comes to being a principal, Wilson said, "I like the chance to still have, though I am doing admin- istrative work, I still have a chance to have an inter- action with the kids, get to know the kids. I feel like I have a chance to make more of a difference than some of the positions that were more removed from the students... you get to see it more up close." When it comes to making the move to Wood Memorial specifically, Wilson said that many people think working at a smaller school would be easier. "But the thing is, in the small system, you have to do everything...I have always said to cut your teeth as an administrator, you would al- most be better to start in a small system because you would have your hands in everything that comes through," said Wilson. When it comes to what is happening for the students, Wilson is proud of the Proj- ect Lead the Way program at Wood Memorial, and he mentioned that it has a great reputation. "I'm happy to be here and I hope to be part of the histo- ry here, and start some new trends," added Wilson.
