Ed Cahill photo PCMS 8th grade volleyball team sweeps Wood Memorial Ashlyn Shoultz had a team-high 15 points off serve to lead the Pike Cen- tral Middle School eighth grade volleyball team to a 25 -22, 25 -7 victory over visit- ing Wood Memorial on Mon- day, Sept. 17. Trailing 16 -12 in the first set, Pike Central scored nine of the next 10 points, in- cluding five following serves by Alyna Sharp and two fol- lowing serves by Shoultz, to take a 21-17 lead. Wood Memorial would close to within two points – at 21-19, 22-20, 23-21 and 24- 22 – before the Lady Char- gers scored the winning point to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match. In the second set, with the score tied 2-2, Pike Central scored 14 straight points – including 13 following serves by Shoultz – to open up a 16 -2 lead. Sharp had six points off serve for the Lady Char- gers while Tessa Vinnedge and Delaney Welch added five each. Emily Krieg had three points off serve. "We got off to a slow start in the first set but came in- to the second ready to play our game," said Pike Central head coach Olivia Leighty, whose team improved to 4- 4. "Ashlyn had a great serv- ing game, leading us with 11 aces." In the seventh grade con- test, Pike Central's Kar- ley Kavanaugh and Brailey Mills scored nine points off serve each in a 18 -25, 25 - 18, 15 -10 loss to Wood Me- morial. During the first set, the Lady Chargers opened up an early 4-0 lead and built it up to as many as 11 points – at 15 -4 – before Wood Me- morial scored 14 of the next 20 points to close to within 21-18. However, Pike Central would score the next four points – including three fol- lowing serves by Kavana- ugh – to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, with the score tied 15 -15, the La- dy Trojans scored 10 of the next 13 points to even the match at one game each. Wood Memorial jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third set. A fter Pike Cen- tral scored to pull to within one point, the Lady Trojans scored 10 straight points to take a commanding 12- 1 lead. Lexie Onyett added six points off serve for the La- dy Chargers while Addy Russell had five. Mills led Pike Central with seven ace serves while Ella Adams had a team-high five kills. On- yett had four kills. Kavana- ugh dished out a team-high 10 set-assists. "We didn't play like our- selves and couldn't get back after we got behind," said Lady Chargers head coach Kinsey Barrett, whose team slipped to 5 -3. "It hap- pens. We're going to shake off this loss and hopeful- ly come back strong in our next match." In the seventh grade B match, Wood Memorial de- feated Pike Central 18 -14. On Wednesday, Sept. 20, the Pike Central Middle School eighth grade volley- ball team dropped a 25 -23, 25 -16 loss to visiting North Posey. "The girls played a well- fought game, although we could have been more ag- gressive at the net," Leighty said. In the seventh grade con- test, Mills scored a team- - high eight points with three ace serves and five kills as the Lady Chargers defeat- ed North Posey 25 -23, 17- 25, 15 -9. "The girls came out ready and determined to win against North Posey," Bar- rett said. "They proved they could come back and win a third set under pressure. We broke North Posey's unde- feated record, and that's a great accomplishment." On Thursday, Sept. 20, the eighth grade volleyball team dropped a 25 -14, 25 -20 loss to Holy Trinity. "We struggled with serves and communica- tion this game," Leighty said. "It's hard to be com- petitive when we miss our serves. We mentally strug- gled to keep energy on the court. We're ready to shake off these last two games and head into next week! " In the seventh grade con- test, Ella Adams, Haylie Ful- cher and Karley Kavanaugh had three kills each in a 16 - 25, 25 -17, 15 -8 loss to Holy Trinity. Mills scored a team- high six points with four ace serves and two kills. 'We struggled to hit the ball over the net when we needed it and made simple technical mistakes that cost us the game," Barrett said. "All we can do is learn from this match and move for- ward." In the seventh grade B game, Pike Central defeat- ed Holy Trinity 25 -23. Shel- by Meadows led the Lady Chargers with three points off serve. Pike Central, which host- ed Princeton on Monday, Sept. 24, will travel to Haub- stadt on Thursday, Sept. 27, before participating in the Wood Memorial Invitation- al on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Lady Chargers will close out the regular season with a home match against South- ridge on Monday, Oct. 1. Chargers, Lady Chargers all run season-best times during PC Invitational By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Despite cool tempera- tures and periods of light rain, Saturday, Sept. 22, proved to be a good day to be a Charger during the Pike Central High School Cross Country Invitational at Prides Creek Park. All 21 members of the Pike Central boys' and girls' teams who participated in the annual event posted their best times of the sea- son – including 17 person- al records and 17 personal course records. "Although it was a lit- tle rainy, the temperatures were perfect running condi- tions and we were very ex- cited to get to run in it," Pike Central head coach Josh Roach said. "The boys' and girls' teams both have been given certain goals to focus on in each of the last couple races, and they are doing a fantastic job of working to those goals. All of our run- ners showed improvement in this race, and are incredi- bly excited to carry that mo- mentum over into the post- season." BOYS: Senior Draven Huff placed seventh out of 126 runners with a sea- son-best and personal re- cord time of 16:50, beating his previous season-best time of 17:11 and his previ- ous PR time of 16:59. The time was also Huff's person- al course record time, beat- ing his previous personal course record time of 17:13. During last year's race, Huff finished 20th out of 127 total runners with a time of 17:29. "Draven has set the bar for us all season long, and he did it again today in set- ting his personal record," Roach said. Sophomore Ijaa Cham- bers placed 11th with a sea- son-best and personal re- cord time of 17:02, beating his previous season-best time of 17:47 and his previ- ous PR time – as well as his previous personal course record time – of 17:24. During last year's race, Chambers placed 28th with a time of 17:51. "Ijaa did a great job bouncing back from Tues- day," Roach said. "He didn't have a bad race at Barr- Reeve, but he wasn't where he felt he wanted to be, and he came out determined to- day. He ran a great race and put himself in a great posi- tion to break the sophomore record if he keeps improv- ing." Junior Nate Woolery – competing for the first time in his high school career on Pike Central's home course – placed 18th with a sea- son-best and personal re- cord time of 17:29, beating his previous season-best and PR time of 18:09 that he had posted during the Barr- Reeve Invitational just four days earlier. "Nate continues to im- prove as well as he is final- ly getting a shot to race ev- ery week," Roach said of Woolery, who has set new PR times in three straight races. Sophomore Trent Zim- merman placed 66th with a season-best and person- al course record time of 19:07, beating his previous season-best time of 20 :51 and his previous personal course record time of 22:50. Sophomore Colt Arm- strong placed 68th with a season-best time of 19:13, beating his previous sea- son-best time of 20 :12. Last year, Armstrong placed 55th with a time of 18:47. Junior Sam Theising placed 78th with a sea- son-best, personal record and personal course record time of 19:53, beating his previous season-best time of 21:02, his previous per- sonal record time of 20 :11 and his previous personal course record time of 20 :33. Last year, Theising placed 25th out of 91 total runners in the boys' junior varsity di- vision with a time of 20 :34. Junior A.J. Hill, mean- while, placed 95th with a season-best and person- al course record time of 20 :33, beating his previous season-best time of 21:01 and his previous personal course record time of 20 :49. Last year, Hill placed 116th with a time of 22:44. "Our second pack made huge improvements as well, with Trent Zimmerman, Colt Armstrong, Sam The- ising and A.J. Hill running most of the race together, but moving that pack up," Roach said. Gibson Southern senior Travis Hart placed first with a time of 15:58. Evansville Mater Dei senior Tanner Schickel was second with a time of 16:13, while For- est Park freshman Spens- er Wolf finished third with a time of 16:18. As a team, Pike Cen- tral placed sixth with 170 points, trailing Castle (99 points), South Knox (105), Gibson Southern (117), Evansville Memorial (142) and Evansville Mater Dei (149). Barr-Reeve (176) was seventh, followed by For- est Park (192), Boonville (213), Washington (281), Vincennes Lincoln (298), Mount Vernon (Posey) (302), Princeton (313), Evansville Harrison (335), Evansville Bosse (409), Sig- nature (434), Tecumseh (437), North Knox (467), Evansville Christian (496) and South Spencer (517). In the boys' junior varsity race, Chargers sophomore Ethan Gorby placed 32nd out of 67 runners with a sea- son-best time of 20 :23, beat- ing his previous season-best time of 21:44; sophomore Lane Potts – who finished 77th in the boys' junior var- sity division last year with a time of 24:32 – placed 33rd with a season-best, per- sonal record and personal course record time of 20 :24, beating his previous sea- son-best time of 24:45, his previous PR time of 22:02 and his previous course re- cord time of 24:15; and ju- nior Noah Russell placed 61st with a season-best time of 24:31, beating his previous season-best time of 25:17. GIRLS: Sophomore Lib- by Stone placed 28th out of 99 runners with a sea- son-best, personal record and personal course record time of 21:23, beating her previous season-best and PR time of 22:36 and her previous personal course record time of 24:02.
