Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Josh Kramer scored the only goal as Gibson Southern defeat- ed visiting Pike Central 1-0 in high school boys' soccer action on Thurs- day, Sept. 20. Kramer's goal came off an assist by senior Alex Meyer with 22:14 left in the first half. Titans senior goal- ie Mitch Priar made 11 saves in goal as Gibson Southern improved to 11-2-4, including 5 -0 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference. With the loss, the Chargers – who won their first-ever PAC title last season – slipped to 9 -4-2 overall while falling to 3- 2 in the conference. Pike Central had won its first three PAC con- tests against Tell City, South Spencer and North Posey before dropping a 1-0 decision at Heritage Hills on Thursday, Sept. 13. "We are disappointed to not defend our PAC ti- tle," Chargers head coach Jacob Western said. "It was a tough loss because I really felt like we came out the first 10 minutes The Pike Central High School girls' soccer team slipped to 4-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Pock- et Athletic Conference with a 5 -1 loss at Gibson Southern on Thursday, Sept. 20. Goals by juniors Mag- gie Rose and Sydney Goedde and freshman Cori Jones gave the La- dy Titans a 3-0 halftime lead. A fter Chargers senior Kelsey Barrett scored with 38:05 left in the sec- ond half to cut the defi- cit to 3-1, Gibson South- ern tacked on two more goals – one by freshman Madalynn Steckler and the other by sophomore Emily McKee – to extend its lead to 5 -1. Senior Hailey Ander- son had two assists for the Lady Titans while Jones and Steckler add- ed one each. Pike Central junior Jen- na Horrall recorded 26 saves in goal. By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net One week after becom- ing the first girl golfer from Pike Central High School to win a section- al crown, senior Natalie Bohnert achieved yet an- other first by qualifying for the state tournament. During the regional tournament at the Coun- try Oaks Golf Club on Sat- urday, Sept. 22, Bohnert shot a 9 -over-par 81 to fin- ish in a five-way tie for fifth place as an individual. Bohnert's score earned her a berth in the state fi- nals – which will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel – as one of the top five individuals from a non-advancing team. Bohnert, who broke the school record with an 18 -hole score of 76 on the same course during the Washington Invitational earlier this season, had previously shot identical scores of 89 during the re- gional tournament each of the past two years. Cool temperatures and rain added to the degree of difficulty on Saturday, Bohnert admitted, but the weather conditions were the same for all the play- ers. "It was really hard to play with the rain and the cold," Bohnert said. "I re- ally didn't play my best, but I don't think anybody was at their best, because of the weather." Bohnert started the day with a double bogey on Hole No. 1 but rallied to make par on the next three holes. Over the course of the final five holes of the front nine, Bohnert had three pars and two dou- ble bogeys, giving her a 6 -over-par 42 at the turn. "Natalie didn't start out well," Pike Central head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "Her first hole was a dou- ble bogey and the front nine, in general, was a bit of a struggle. "I told her after nine holes not to get discour- aged because I knew the scores were going to be re- ally high due to the terri- ble weather," Gideon add- ed. "And if she just played solid on the back, she would be fine." "I kind of took it shot by shot and knew what I needed to fix after each bad shot," Bohnert said. "But once we got to the back nine, I felt like I had a clean slate and I could just go out and create with what I had left." On the back nine, Bohnert made one birdie, five pars, two bogeys and one double bogey to card at 3-over-par 39.
