The Patoka River in Winslow has dropped a tad, but if we get more rain or storms, the river will be back up to its brim again. The weather has been hot and humid, but since Fall has begun, the cooler temps are on its way. We all hope this cooler weather is in the forecast! In our area, they say between 60 -65 at night and 74-77 for the daytime. But, so we all have said, this is Southern Indiana and our forecast changes from day to day. Speaking of Fall, the leaves will begin to fall to the ground a little more now, and that means the raking will begin, so kids, plan to get outside and have fun as you rake up the leaves in a pile and then jump into the leaves, and do this all over again. Remember to not rake in the limbs, just leaves. Saturday, Septem- ber 15 was the 13th An- nual Winslow Communi- ty Festival and the Origi- nal 13th Year of the Light- Up Winslow Parade, where the weather was hot and hu- mid, but it's always hot and humid every year. All our groups did a great job as we set up through the week, and when that Saturday be- gan, we were all there to have fun and see old friends and see all the children en- joy the games, rides and just have the family time at the fes- tival. The Winslow Beautification was Uptown on Main Street and Center Street, where the Flea Market spaces were few this year. The Fro- zen T-Shirt Contest had 29 who kept cool as they de- frosted their shirt and won by wearing their shirt first. I know there were three groups, but I only have the name of Chase Williams who won in his age group. Now if you know the other two winners, let me know. Patoka Township had the stair climb at the Old Gym and it was liked from sev- eral who attended. The ex- traction from the car was real interesting of how they would get people out of a wrecked vehicle safely. There were musical groups of Tony Rothrock, and who- ever wanted to do kara- oke. Down the street were the Masons, who sold ice cream, and the Spurgeon Monroe Auxiliary, who sold food. The House of Mercy had the Kiddie Train, the Nazarene Church sold food where their profit will help Irene's Place. The winner of the Kayak was Dale Lamb, and Laif the Magician was there this year. Down at Riverside Park were the Winslow Lions, where Norm and I were with more of our Lions and the friends of the Lions. The breakfast was sold out and the lunch crowd was heavy, then slow all day long. The shuttle was a hit for most of the crowd to get from one place to another and the shuttle will be in the Trac- tor Drive that was Saturday, September 22, furnished by Jim's Tractor. The Jim's Tractor Show had 17 trac- tors, with the Oldest Trac- tor being William Crupper's, the prettiest tractor was Ron Croomer's, and the Ugliest tractor was David and Kavin Gayhart's. The kids' games and the big slide were run by Tammy English, Sher- ry Nelson and Paula Taylor, who every year help Lin- da Nelson with the games. Linda couldn't help this year, but she did come down for an hour. The citizen of the year went to Chris Clemmy Cle- ments and the Kayak Ma- fia, who also couldn't do the two-mile float on the Pato- ka River, but they did do a float at Twin Pit Lake. The Lions had music by Lowell Thomas, who got Lucy Gam- ble and Henry Nelson up on stage to sing. Then our other group was Common Ground, and they were a hit from all us Lions. The Karaoke Con- test was three contestants of Kyle and Sabrina Hart- ley, and Jimmy Thompson. Kyle won first place and Jim- my won second place. The Lions had a drawing for a girls' bike that was donated, and Bella Thomas was the winner. Those Winslow Li- ons roared all day long with food served and the Kiddie Train was a big hit, also. Le- roy, Pat, Mike, Lucy, Jerry, Rosella, Henry, Jim, Norm and I would like to thank all who came down to the park and uptown as you en- joyed the fun-filled day with family and friends for our Winslow Community Festi- val of 13 years to serve our small Town of Winslow. The 13th Light-Up Winslow Parade was so big that as the Winslow Fire Truck was pulling back into the bay at the Station House, the parade was still coming down Union Street from Oak Hill Cemetery to travel north on Main Street. Norm and I were the last ones to end the parade with the lit- up dragon we had borrowed for this occasion. I waved to all the entries as they began their way up to Main Street and everyone was lit up beautiful with floats, trucks of all sizes, cars, motorcy- cles, fire trucks from all over Pike County. One was an old restored fire truck, kiddie train, kayaks, Jeeps, Little Miss Pike Co, Teen Miss Pike Co, State Sena- tor Mark, the Republicans, the Democrats, the Winslow Town Council, a Scag, Up In Smoke Smoker, tow truck, churches, sports leagues, nursing home, Winslow Li- ons, Winslow Beautification, and I know lots more. The Beautification float, the 1944 Fire Truck and Levi Can- non's 4x4 Chevy Truck all got a trophy and Norm gave out 50 dash plaques to the first 50 units, and we wish we had more to give out. My reaction as we pulled onto Main Street to throw out the candy to all the kids was, "I have never seen so many kids" standing along Main Street and they were not just in a few blocks up- town, they were all the way from Union to the Ig- loo. I would like to say a big Thank You to all who were in the 13th Light-Up Winslow Parade and to everyone who showed up on Main Street to see our 13 year of joy we all have in this event, and for the love we have for our community of family and friends. Sunday morning, Norm and I helped Mike and Le- roy to pack up the trailers from the park. Then we got a broom and shovel and be- gan to clean up the candy and wrappers, which were not that many, all along the parade route and got our picture taken from Li- sa and Greg. They tried to be sneaky, but we caught them. Then we saw Ralph and Jeanette putting their stage away, so we helped them also. All our groups had a great time, and even if we didn't make a profit, we all had the best day as we served our community in a day of fun and loads of enjoyment from all the kids. Thank you all for a fun time! See you all next year on the 3rd Satur- day in September 2019. Saturday, September 22 was the 11th Pike County Tractor Drive in conjunction with the Winslow Communi- ty Festival, sponsored by the Winslow Lions Club. We all met at the Stendal Communi- ty Center, where 21 tractors signed up, but one couldn't make the drive, which left at 10 a.m., after several stars talked and the prayer for the Continued on page 8
