The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 12, 2012 C-5 ★ Church news Continued from page 4 They were hoping for a large army, not a multitude of the heavenly host. They anticipated a bigger and better David, not the obscure rabbi who always seemed like an outsider when He visited Jerusalem. They probably expected an orator, but did not expect the speeches of this Messiah to leave people speechless. The very best things God does in our lives usually come as a surprise to us. So wouldn't it be surprising if we, who think we know so much about Jesus, would be startled to see Him in a Vincent Christian whole new way. Devotion written by Rev, church Don Collins. 8264 E. Some people think that "Christ" is Jesus' last name. Jesus Christ, like Joe Johnson or Audrey Smith. If you have thought that, don't feel bad. It is just evidence that over the centuries our understanding of Jesus as the Christ has become so solid in our thinking that we don't think of "Jesus" without "Christ." Jesus is His name, Christ is His title. Among all the titles He bears, Son of God, Son of Man, Good Shepherd, Alpha and Omega, it all begins in the gospel story with this one incredible announcement: "He is Christ the Lord." "Christos" in Greek, and thus, "Christ" in English; "Messiah" in Hebrew, which means "Anointed One." But what is the meaning of "Anointed One?" In the Old Testament, three kinds of people were anointed: kings, priests and prophets. So when we hear "Christ," we should think of Jesus in each of those three roles. He is a king, ruling in people's lives not just because they are in His realm but also because He is in their hearts. He is a priest, one who stands between God and humanity—One who sacrifices; One who intercedes, the mediator, the bridge. He is a Prophet. Prophets had brought the words of God to the people, but the Messiah is the Word of God to the people. In those days, when the heavy hand of Caesar Augustus dominated the Holy Land, people were looking for the Anointed One to come. sus did when He was upon this earth for He is our example. You will feel the presence of His Spirit and be refreshed and renewed. Remember to pray for your loved ones, friends and neighbors that are sick in body or facing problems of life. What a wonderful promise! During this festive Christmas season when we light our yards; light our houses; light our Christmas trees; isn't it comforting to know we never walk in darkness again. Jesus will light our life. Come worship "The Light of Life" at the little church with the big heart that stands beside the road. WES celebrated American Education Week The Winslow Elementary School celebrated American Education Week by going "Around the World" this year. The school was decorated for the week and the students had special lunches, speakers from foreign countries, crafts, and various classroom activities. The week included a staff sumo wrestling contest which some considered the highlight. All the classrooms planned educational activities and lessons centered around the different continents. As they walked through the halls, students could visit Egypt, Asia, Mexico, the Amazon, a castle and Argentina. They even ate lunch every day in Italy. Friday at the end of the week was a dress-up day. Parents and grandparents joined their children for a special lunch. The students and staff look forward to a new and exciting American Education Week each year. Winslow Elementary fifth graders walk down the halls during the costume parade on Friday of American Education Week. The parade has become a tradition for the students to show their outfits and to see how everyone else chose to dress for the day. Mike Higdon of Petersburg played the bagpipes for the Winslow students during American Education Week. He is shown with fifth graders Brandon Goeppner and Avery Dyer who are also dressed for the week. Riley Bolin from Lindsey William's kindergarten class is joined by her mom Jaime Bolin and grandmother, Marla Morrison at the special lunch on Friday. Why Wait for Better Vision?
