By Ginger Rogers I've never read A.M. Homes before. But although I definitely plan to read more by Homes, I'm not recommending this author to everyone. The book is titled May We Be Forgiven, and the story is hard-hitting, uncomfortable, horrible, but funny in a weird, surreal way, not for those who prefer inspirational books or cozy mysteries. The story explores family dynamics, human disconnect, abrupt and catastrophic life changes. It follows the life of Harry Silver, a modest history professor who is writing a biography of Richard Nixon, and his life in the aftermath of his brothers' night of violent acts. Violent acts were not a surprise, given his brother's history, but the guilt that Harry shares robs him of his own life, and thrusts him into his brothers'. I was half way through this book before it fell open so that I saw the picture on the back fly leaf and realized that A.M. Homes is a woman. So convincingly did she write from a man's point of view, I would never have guessed that it wasn't a man writing it. I'm only a little over halfway through now, so I'll have to give you my final opinion next week. This week we're looking forward to our Christmas Open House, but before then: Today, there is preschool at Winslow from 9-10:30. Thursday preschool meets at Petersburg from 9-10:30. Also on Thursday Mother Goose on the Loose meets at 11 a.m. Then at 1 p.m. the Otwell preschool is from 1-2:15. Also on Thursday there will be a jewelry making group at 6:30 at Petersburg. This class will be making jewelry from Scrabble tiles. On Friday, Preschool is at Winslow from 9-10:30. Saturday, join us for the open house at Petersburg. Santa will be here at 10 a.m. The Friends of the Library will be sponsoring a book sale from 10-2:30. Children can make edible Christmas trees with Miss Janet at 10:30; Teens are making holiday cards, there will be a time to make zipper pulls, and several other crafts.
