Chargers rally doesn't last against Southridge By Mike Johansen For awhile in the second quarter it looked like the Pike Central Chargers varsity boys basketball team might make a game of it against the Southridge Raiders, but a 14-2 run to end the second quarter pretty much decided the game. The Raiders pulled away in the second half to record a 60-36 victory in the opening Pocket Athletic Conference game of the season for Pike Central, while it was the third straight PAC win for the Raiders during the young season. Southridge also owns double digit wins over Gibson Southern and Tell City. "We got another disappointing start, 14-4, but we battled back in the second quarter to tie the game at 18-18. Kegan Aldridge picked up his second foul and it seamed that we lost our assignments on defense and focus of what we were doing in the second quarter. Southridge went on a 14-2 run to end the half. We gave up 25 points off turnovers and that was mostly the difference in the game," said Pike Central Head Coach John Mokris. "We need to be able to transfer what we have prepared about our opponents and the things that we have learned in practice throughout the week and implement it in game situations. We prepared the kids for the exact offenses and defenses that Southridge was running, but we could not handle the pressure Saturday night. Once we converted on our first pass into our half court offense we seamed to settle down." The first quarter was not a real good one on the offensive end, although the defense made a few plays. The Raiders scored the first two baskets before Stefano Dalla Vecchia put in one for the Chargers with 6:30 remaining in the quarter. The Chargers went silent for the next 5:20 in the quarter missing six shots while the Raiders scoring another six points to lead 10-2. Kegan Aldridge put in a basket for a 10-4 score. The Raiders had a shot by Jared Sparrow go in for a 12-4 edge in the opening quarter. Sparrow had another basket to begin the second period to give the Raiders a 14-4 lead. Aldridge cut into that lead with a basket with 7:07 left in the first half. Chris Downey answered another Southridge basket with a short shot off a pass from Shaine Eck for an 8-16 score. After a Pike Central time out, Downey was able to get open again for two points and Aldridge made it a six point run with two to cut the difference to 12-16. The Raiders answered for the first time in a couple of minutes, but then went silent on the scoring end for awhile. Aldridge made two free throws and Tyler Garland put in two free throws followed by another basket by Aldridge for an 18-18 score with 2:57 remaining in the half. Aldridge picked up a third foul and had to sit and that seemed to change the momentum back to the other end of the floor. The Chargers did not score again until 27 seconds remained and the Raiders went on a 14-0 run. Only two free throws by Trevor Claridge cut into that run at the end of the half. The Chargers were outscored 20-16 in the period and trailed 32-20 at the break. Things looked up when Claridge started the second half making two free throws, but the Chargers again went silent for a little while and Southridge scored the next five points. Garland answered with a basket off a Claridge pass, but Southridge answered with a free throw and a basket to lead 40-24. Downey had a basket off a pass from Dustin Meny. The Raiders answered with a two and Meny put in a basket with 2:51 remaining in the third frame. A basket by Aldridge and a free throw by Downey helped keep the Chargers close as Southridge matched that to lead 46-31 at the end of the period. The Raiders also scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter for a 20 point lead, 51-31. Garland finally answered, but the Chargers could not sustain any offense. Garland had a free throw two and a half minutes later for a 34-54 score. Only two free throws by Meny interrupted a six point closing run by the Raiders as they finished winning by 24, 60-36. Chad O'Bryan led Southridge with 13 points by the 6-6 center and Cody Thompson added 12. Kegan Aldridge led the Chargers with 12 points and Chris Downey added nine. Claridge had seven rebounds, Downey four and three each for Nathan Simmons, Tyler Garland and Stefano Dalla Vecchia. Claridge had two assists and Aldridge four steals.
