Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas There is a single Bible verse that sums up what Thanksgiving is all about. It is found in Psalms 136:1, "O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever." People who are thankful worship a God who is good and His mercy endures always. As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day, let us count our blessings and express grati- tude to God and those who have blessed our life. In spite of 9/11, the hurricanes, fires, worldwide terrorism, mass killings, we have much to be thankful for. Thanksgiving is an American holiday with a deep spiritual meaning. It is not a secular holiday but one set aside to thank God. Today we need to focus on God and re- mind ourselves of our spiritual heritage as Americans. God has richly blessed our na- tion. If only for a day let us put our problems aside and show an attitude of gratitude. To have peace of mind and be happy we must develop a thankful heart. We must learn to see the good things in life. Our rich blessings include faith in God, family, friends, health, em- ployment and the privilege of living in America. We should be thankful that our President and many around him are peo- ple of Christian faith. The important things in life are still in tact. I suggest you look at our troubled world and then you will realize how blessed we are in America. I have traveled in countries like Russia, Bosnia and the Middle East. These visits to other countries always remind me how wonderful it is to be an American. In counting your blessings, begin with God and then celebrate the freedom and mate- rial blessings we enjoy in America. Romans 8:2, when correctly read, is a most blessed passage of Scripture. To get the sense we should place a dash between the words "Spirit" and "of." Thus it would read: "For the law of the Spirit — of life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death." When a sinner places his trust in Christ as Savior he is justified before the bar of God, because Christ's death and righteous- ness are imputed to him. This is a judicial matter. But at the same moment something else happens: the Spirit regenerates and gives new life (Tit. 3:5). This is a law, an inexora- ble, unchangeable law. The sinner who sin- cerely places his trust in Christ as Savior is given life by the Holy Spirit. It is always so; it is never otherwise. I John 5:12 says: "He that hath the Son hath life…." John 3:36 says that "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life" and Col. 3:3 declares that the believer's life is "hid with Christ in God." Thus the Apostle could say: "The law of the Spirit, [that of] life in Christ, hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Ad- am forfeited his life by sin, but the believ- er's new life can never be forfeited, for this life is nothing less than the life of Christ, in whom the believer now stands perfect and complete before God. It is a law, a fixed unchangeable law, that sin brings forth death (Rom. 5:12; 6:23; et al). This is called "the law of sin and death," but the believer has already died for sin in Christ and has been given new life by the Spirit. Thus "the law of the Spirit," that of "life in Christ," has made the simplest be- liever "free from the law of sin and death." Thank God for "the law of the Spirit," ev- erlasting life through the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. Well, Christmas in the Park display work is in the final stages and now we are try- ing to put our work in progress together as the cabin and porch will be decorated and we need volunteers to sing carols for the patrons of the displays. At present time we have four or five definite maybe's who say that they will sing carols. I must admit it sounds like fun and we may even have Mrs. Santa Clauss singing with us. If you would be willing to sing with us please call 812-354-9597. If you don't get an answer leave a message and we will get back to you. Did the wind cause any damage for you this past Saturday? Main St. lightpoles sure got hit hard and wiped out a couple blocks of lights. Since the committee has been work- ing on making our Main street prettier with decorating and new flowers and such we do have a Main Street to be proud of, so I hope the poles aren't damaged badly and can be put back up soon. Sunday at church our sermon covered the need to grow in number but also in person- al strength of faith in our Lord Jesus. Our numbers are down greatly but for church- es to grow the people who do attend must develop a stronger sense of urgency to do their part to grow the Kingdom of God. This can be seen in our personal lives as we live our faith. Any person who takes care of their body will tell you that you must exercise to keep Continued on page 2 See R AMBLINGS on 3 yourself in tone. Your faith is no different because the more you allow Jesus to con- trol your faith the stronger your faith will become and the better example you are to others. You can witness to people by word and they may understand but there is no misunderstanding how you live your life in front of them. "I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of your wonderful deeds" (Psalm 9:1). Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving. May we take the time to pause and think of all the things we have to be thankful for and don't forget to thank the one who gave it all. Don't forget Thanksgiving isn't just for one day a year. It is a state of mind. We invite you to worship with us. Ralph Newkirk, Pastor Marla Morrison, Report- er Now as we enter Thanks- giving I wanted to post a reading from the "Bible Study Tools" which I was en- couraged by. "Being thankful isn't just for the Thanksgiving holi- day. Scripture tells us to be "thankful in everything, in all circumstances" (I Thessalo- nians 5:18). When we find ourselves overwhelmed with burdens and worried about tomorrow, we can praise God for who he is and his promise to never leave us or forsake us. We have been blessed with the free gift of salvation and eternal life! .......reflect on all that we have to be thank- ful for. Find some quiet time to pray and thank God, read Scripture out-loud, and find a renewed heart that is filled with peace and joy." This week remember what you have to be thankful for and be encouraged, and en- courage one another. Just knowing the promise of Jesus that he would never leave us nor forsake us is enough to be thankful for. So when we get together for dinner this Thursday with family and friends let us tell each other that we are thankful for each other as well as all the bless- ings we as American's are blessed with. Happy Thanks- giving. See our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Ayrshi- reValleyGB. Frank A. Coleman, Pastor day Bible study, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut ins and our lost loved ones. Thanksgiving is most of all heartfelt gratitude to God for all the spiritual blessings we have received by faith in Christ as revealed in His Word. We find the truest sense of the word in Colos- sians 1:10 -12 "Walk worthy of the Lord...being fruitful in every good work, and in- creasing in the knowledge of God...unto all patience and long suffering with joyful- ness; Giving thanks unto the Father."
