The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, November 22, 2017 B- 3 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team slipped to 1-3 with a 55 -30 loss to visiting Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Alison Hein, a 6 -foot-1 ju- nior, scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight re- bounds while 5 -foot-11 fresh- man Maycee Lange added 15 points and a game-high 14 re- bounds as the Lady Alices – who improved to 2-2 – outre- bounded Pike Central 45 -13. Eighteen of Vincennes Lin- coln's rebounds came on the offensive end, which the Lady Alices converted into 18 sec- ond-chance points. "They were bigger, stron- ger, more athletic, and they wanted it more than us," said Lady Chargers head coach Kyle McCutchan, whose team grabbed just two offensive re- bounds of their own. "That's just simply what it is. They just wanted the ball more. We didn't work hard enough to get the ball off the boards." Falling behind 2-0 on a quick basket by Hein, Pike Central took a 3-2 lead when senior Erika Hendrixson hit a three-pointer with 7:30 left in the opening period. Hein, fouled trying to put back her own missed shot, sank two free throws to boost Vincennes Lincoln to a 4-3 lead before Lady Chargers se- nior Brook Nalley hit two foul shots of her own to give Pike Central a 5 -4 lead with 6:57 left in the first quarter. The Lady Alices, howev- er, would score eight straight points – on three baskets by Lange and two free throws by Hein – to surge ahead 12- 5 with 4:59 remaining in the opening period. Following an exchange of three-pointers by Lady Char- ger senior Demi Croak and Vincennes Lincoln sopho- more Darrian Carmean, Pike Central rallied, scoring six consecutive points – on bas- kets by Croak, Nalley and Hendrixson – to pull to with- in 15 -14 with 21 seconds left in the first period. That would prove to be the high-water mark for Pike Cen- tral, however, as the Lady Al- ices scored 17 unanswered points to stretch their lead to 32-14 with just under three minutes remaining in the sec- ond quarter. During that stretch, the La- dy Chargers were 0 -for-5 from the floor – including 0 -for-2 from beyond the three-point line – while turning the ball over four times. A fter Pike Central ended the scoring drought when junior Becca Crow hit a pair of free throws with 1:26 left in the first half, Lange an- swered with two free throws of her own with 17.9 seconds remaining to give Vincennes Lincoln a 34-16 halftime lead. "They're long, they have length, but we got a lot of open looks," said McCutchan, whose team went 0 -for-6 from the field and turned the ball over six times during the sec- ond period. "We just didn't convert any. We hit a few ear- ly and then, once we missed a few – I don't know if our confidence got down – they started scoring. You can't not score and let them score 17 in a row, because you're going to get blown out." "We can't go through offen- sive dry spells," McCutchan added. "We turned the ball over some – probably more than I realize – but we got shots. We've just got to hit them. It's something we've got to get better at. It's some- thing that's plagued us all year. We've struggled with scoring the ball." Things got off to a promis- ing start for the Lady Char- gers in the second half, when a free throw by senior Audra Stone and a three-point play by Hendrixson cut the deficit to 34-20 with 6:36 left in the third period. Then, after Vincennes Lin- coln senior Chasity Trueblood hit a pair of free throws to ex- tend the Lady Alices' lead to 36 -20, back-to-back baskets by sophomore Lauren Vaughn and Nalley pulled Pike Cen- tral to within 36 -24. "When we cut it down, we moved the ball, got some good looks and hit a few shots," Mc- Cutchan said. "Offenses look great when you hit shots. It doesn't matter what you run. If you hit a few, then you look good." However, after Vincennes Lincoln head coach Travis Connor called a timeout with 4:55 left in the third quar- ter, the Lady Alices rolled off eight straight points to stretch their lead to 44-24 with 2:08 remaining in the period. A basket by junior Hailey Marchino narrowed the defi- cit to 18 points – 44-26 – but Vincennes Lincoln would Pike Central's Lauren Vaughn hit a runner from the right side and got a lay- up two minutes later. Brook Nalley hit two free throws with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the Tro- jan lead to just three at 28 - 25. Vaughn's three-pointer with 6:58 left in the game gave the Chargers their first lead since the early in the second quarter. They never looked back. Audra Stone scored with 1:54 left to give the Char- gers a four-point lead. On a night when scoring was a scarce commodity, neither team would score again un- til Hendrixson hit both ends of one and one free throws with 8.5 seconds left to seal the win 34-28. Pike Central has had simi- lar scoring droughts in their losses to Vincennes and South Knox. "It is tough to beat a qual- ity team when you don't score in a quarter. They (La- dy Chargers) don't quit. We just have to be more consis- tent. We have to play a four quarter game. When we get there, we are going to be pretty tough. We just have to do a better job to get to that point," said McCutchan. The win improved Pike Central's record to 2-3, while Wood Memorial fell to 1-4.
