"You can't bring ener- gy half the game against a team like that," McCutchan said. "I mean, they're back- to-back sectional champs for a reason. They're a nice team, and it was going to take a great effort. You had to think some things would go our way, but they hit a lot of shots early." Hendrixson led the La- dy Chargers with 10 points and six rebounds while Nal- ley added six points and a game-high four steals. Croak pitched in with five pints and three steals. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made nine of 38 field goal attempts – a 23.7 per- cent average – and hit 10 of 12 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times. A fter Hendrixson and Croak hit back-to-back three-point shots early in the first quarter, the Lady Char- gers missed their next 15 at- tempts to finish 2-for-17 from beyond the arc. "I think we settled too much," McCutchan said. "When they had (6 -foot-3 senior Lisa) Sparks in, she just sat back and gave us the open shot, and we just kind of settled for it, which is fine. Wide-open looks at the var- sity level, you've got to hit open shots." "But, you know, they're a big team and it was hard to score on them in the paint," McCutchan added. "They were big and strong pretty much across the board. But we took the easy shot instead of maybe working it." Trueblood netted nine points and grabbed six re- bounds for Vincennes Lin- coln while Carmean added seven points and dished out a game-high four assists. For the game, the Lady Alices made 19 of 54 field goal attempts – a 35.2 per- cent average – and hit 15 of 16 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 18 times. A fter opening the season with a 54-34 win over Evans- ville Reitz, Pike Central av- eraged just 35.7 points per game in consecutive losses to Boonville (44-40), South Knox (40 -37) and Vincennes Lincoln. "We just have to get bet- ter on offense," McCutchan said. "And I have to do a bet- ter job of getting us more prepared to get the ball into the paint. I mean, we work on it every day, but we have to get better at it, obvious- ly, because we're not scor- ing enough to win varsity games." In junior varsity action, ju- nior Kenzie Dunn scored a game-high 18 points to lead Pike Central to a 44-34 victo- ry over Vincennes Lincoln. Freshman Mallory Hicks added 10 points while junior Hannah Carnahan tossed in seven points as the Lady Chargers' JV team improved to 3-0. Trailing 8 -7 at halftime, the Lady Chargers out- scored Washington 5 -3 in the third period to take a 12-11 lead before the Lady Hatchets bounced back in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 14-14 at the end of regulation. However, Pike Cen- tral scored the only points during the overtime period – on a basket by Kahle Young and a pair of free throws by Capehart – to emerge with the win. "Washington is one of the better teams we will face," said Lady Chargers head coach Rachelle Johns, whose team improved to 3-1. "We played them twice last year and lost by 12 points and 14 points, respectively." "Their tactic is to speed up the game, force turnovers, and score fastbreak points," Johns added. "We combat- ed this by slowing down and making better passes." Kennedy Willis paced the Lady Chargers with five points while Capehart came off the bench to add four points. Liberty Taylor tossed in three points, and Kahle Young, Keena Young and Chloe Williams netted two points each. Chloe Browning and Sydney Melton scored five points each to past Wash- ington. "I am very proud of these girls," Johns said. "They worked their tails off both defensively and offensively. We still have work to do, but this win is a great confidence booster." In the eighth grade con- test, Pike Central outscored Washington 5 -0 in the fourth quarter but fell just one point short in a 19 -18 loss to the Lady Hatchets. While disappointed with the one-point loss, Lady Chargers head coach Eric Knight noted that last sea - son, Washington's then-sev- enth graders defeated Pike Central's then-seventh grad- ers 44-11. "At the start of the year, I sat the girls down and asked what team they wanted to beat this year," said Knight, whose team slipped to 2- 2. "All the girls yelled out 'Washington.' So we worked on many things and different strategies to prepare us for Washington." Baskets by Ashton Catt and Kya Sullivan and a free throw by Sophie Carnahan kept the Lady Chargers with- in two points – at 7-5 – head- ing into the second period. "We started the night off with five guards in the start- ing lineup," Knight said. "We worked on slowing the game down and working the clock. They can't score on us if they don't have the ball – that was our game plan. The girls did this to perfection. I was real- ly proud of their efforts and abilities to hold the ball and slow down the pace of the game." Washington would out- score Pike Cenral 7-4 in the second period to extend its lead to 14-9 before widening the gap to 19 -13 at the start of the fourth quarter. "Defensively, the girls did a great job, holding them to only five points in the second half," Knight said. "The girls got after it on defense. That is something we have been working on each practice, and you can tell the girls are taking pride in the defensive side of the game." Despite making just two of 15 free throw attempts – including one of five tries in the fourth period – the La- dy Chargers had a chance to take the lead before time ex- pired. "We had a shot at the end," Knight said. "Down one with 10 seconds left, we called our final timeout, set a play up and ran it correctly. We just missed the shot. I can't stop saying how proud of the girls I am." Sullivan paced Pike Cen- tral with six points while Alli Holder tossed in four points. Carnahan, Catt, Albany Ash- ley and Mallory Hunt added two points each. "Kya Leighty and Kya Sul- livan did a great job on de- fending the guards," Knight said. "They troubled Wash- ington enough that it stopped them from getting into an of- fense, and this really slowed them down and forced Wash- ington to shoot from the out- side. Mallory Hunt and Ash- ton Catt did a great job of defending down low and al- so ripping down the boards." Knight added that the La- dy Chargers won the battle of the boards by one – 19 -18 – while turning the ball over 14 times, while Washington had 22 turnovers. "Overall, I was pleased with the way we played," Knight said. "We ended up with the loss, but the girls came out of this game with a chip on their shoulders and a good look at how our sea- son can turn around. They played their hearts out." PCMS 7th grade girls' basketball team drops loss to Lady Rebels The Pike Central Middle School seventh grade girls' basketball team slipped to 3-2 on the season after suf- fering a 23-17 loss to visiting South Spencer on Thursday, Nov. 16. "This was not one of our better games," Lady Char- gers head coach Rachelle Johns said. "I'm not sure if the girls were over confident after beating Washington or exhausted. We didn't run our plays, block out, or rebound. Our intensity wasn't there and it showed in our defense. Our subs played very well and deserve praise for doing so." Delaney Welch paced Pike Central with six points while Kennedy Willis added four points. Kahle Young netted three points, and Jaylynn Capehart and Chloe Williams scored two points each. "We will go back to the drawing board and work hard the next two days to prepare for next week's games against Washington Catholic and Haubstadt."
