Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Erika Hendrixson signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Maryville University on Fri- day, Nov. 17. Maryville University, a private, co-educational uni- versity founded in 1872, is located in the city of Town and Country, a suburb of St. Louis, Mo., and offers more than 90 degrees at the undergraduate, mas - ter's and doctoral levels. The school's enrollment of 7,800 – 3,200 undergradu- ates and 4,600 post-grad- uates – includes students from 50 states and 60 coun- tries. "I visited a few times and I really like the school," said Hendrixson, the 18 -year- old daughter of Melissa Hendrixson, of Hunting- burg, and Scott Hendrix- son, of Petersburg. "They are very well known for their medical field stuff, like the sports medicine ar- ea, and that's what I want to major in. So that was a real- ly big factor." Hendrixson, who plans to major in exercise sci- ence, said that she also be- came "really close" with the team's current play- ers as well as the coaching staff during her visits to Maryville University. "It just felt right," said Hendrixson, who also con- sidered offers from Oak- land City University and In- By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Writer sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's Lady Chargers picked up their second win of the year as Erika Hendrixson had a game-high 16 points to lead them to a 34-28 victory over last year's Class A state champion Wood Memorial on Friday night. It was a game that saw both teams hit scoring droughts that lasted more than eight minutes. Hendrixson was hot in the first quarter as she knocked down two three-pointers and two field goals for 10 first-quarter points. When she took a nice pass from Natalie Burkhart to score her 10th point in the paint, the Chargers were up 14-8 with just 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Wood Memorial's Sydney Lamar scored with 11 sec- onds left in the first to cut the Charger lead to 14-10 as the quarter ended. It was the start of a 14-0 run by the Trojans that ran the entire second quarter. Wood Memorial pushed their lead to 22-14 before Hendrixson rebounded Burkhart's miss and got a putback to make it 22-16 with 7:40 left in the third. It would be another two-and-a-half minutes before the Chargers would score again. "We got off to a really good start offensively, but then didn't score a point in the second quarter. Just some- thing we have struggled with all year, to be consistent on offense," said Charger head coach Kyle McCutchan. The Trojans pushed their lead back to 26 -16 with 5:38 left in the third on a driving lay-up by Lamar. Pike Central finally got a jump shot to fall when Bur- khart hit a three-pointer to make it 26 -19 with 5:04 left in the third quarter. It was just the spark the Chargers needed. Wood's Lexi Lashbrook made it 28 -19 with just more than four minutes left in the third quarter. But it was the last time the Trojans would score. "We fell down by 10 at the end of the third and had our backs to the wall. We picked up our intensity and ag- gressiveness, forced more turnovers, converted some of those into scores. We are at our best when we are scor- ing off our defense," said Coach McCutchan. The Pike Central High School wrestling team opened its season by going 4-0 in the Wood Memorial Duals on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Chargers won 47 of 56 bouts – including 25 by pins – while defeating North Knox 57-24, Black - ford 66 -9, Wood Memorial 72-12 and Evansville Bosse 80 -6. Senior Jake Sisk went 4-0 with three wins by pin and one win by forfeit in the 220 -pound division while senior Gavin Boyd went 4- 0 with three wins by pin and one win by decision in the 182-pound division. "Jake Sisk wrestled so well that the coaches decid- ed to name him the wres- tler of the tournament," Pike Central head coach Billy Hewig said. "The one I was most impressed with was Gavin Boyd." The 165 -pound Boyd, Hewig noted, normally competes in the 170 -pound division. "He bumped up to 182 to help his team," Hewig said. "Not only did he win the weight class, he dom- inated it. He made his op- ponents' days not enjoyable with a brutal mix of throws and throwing in legs from the top." Also going 4-0 on the day were sophomore Dalton Williams, who had three wins by pin and one win by forfeit in the 106 -pound di- vision; senior Dylan Jones, who had two wins by pins and two wins by forfeit in the 126 -pound division; senior Christian Alvey, who had one win by pin, two wins by decision and one win by forfeit in the 195 -pound division; and se- nior Silas Goff, who had two wins by pin and two wins by forfeit in the 285 -pound di- vision. Caleb Henson went 3- 0, with one win by pin and two wins by forfeit, in the 132-pound division, while freshman Lane Potts went 3-0, with three wins by for- feit, in the 106 -pound divi- sion. Five Chargers went 3- 1 on the day – freshman Lane Miller, with two wins by pin and one win by forfeit PCHS wrestling team opens season with sweep of Wood Memorial Duals Pike Central High School senior Erika Hendrixson (seated, center) pre- pares to sign a national letter of intent to play basketball at Maryville Uni- versity on Friday, Nov. 17. Kyson Western, who was named the Pocket Athlet- ic Conference's Player of the Year, scored a total of 32 goals – falling just one short of the school record 33 goals scored by Colton White in 2016 – and had 22 assists as the Chargers went 15 -3-1, including a per- fect 7-0 in the PAC to win their first-ever conference title. During his four-year high school career, Kyson West- ern scored a total of 87 goals – ranking second all-time in the PAC behind Gibson South- ern's Hunter DeWeese, who scored 101 goals – while set- ting PAC career records for most assists (76) and points (250). White, who was named to the District 4 All-District team and received All-State honor- able mention last fall, current- ly ranks fourth in the PAC in both goals scored (68) and points (158).
