Marchino uninjured in crash A Winslow teen escaped injury Wednesday morning when he crashed on the way to school. Jacob Marchino, 17, of 852 S. CR 175 E., Winslow, was driving north on Highway 61, when he lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Cav- alier and ran off the right side of the road. "His car then spun around and hit a tree and a fence facing south," said State Trooper John Davis. Marchino's Cavalier was estimated to be a total loss in the 7:30 a.m. crash at 472 N. Highway 61. PCHS places at Indiana SkillsUSA Precision Machining state competition Noah McCain, a senior in Pike Central High School's Precision Machining I class, finished first at the state lev- el of the Indiana SkillsUSA Precision Machining Com- petition at Indianapolis on April 16. He won a machin- ist toolbox, machinist tools and a $2500 scholarship to Vincennes University. Nick Lane, a senior in the second year class, placed third in the contest and won an as- sortment of machinist tools. Also competing were Caleb Miller and Logan Schmitt. The SkillsUSA Champi- onships is the showcase for the best career and techni- cal students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. Twen- ty-two students from six re- gions competed at the Sate championship in Precision Machining. The competition involved making parts on the verti- cal mill, lathe and surface grinder, as well as blueprint reading, shop math and a general related written test. SkillsUSA is a partner- ship of students, teachers and industry representa- tives working together to en- sure America has a skilled workforce and that each stu- dent excels while prepar- ing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupa- tions. The events include lo- cal, state and national com- petitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual national-level Skill- sUSA Championships, near- ly 6,000 students compete in 99 occupational and leader- ship skill areas. SkillsUSA programs al- so help to establish indus- try standards for job skill training in the lab and class- room, and promote commu- nity service. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. De- partment of Education and is cited as a "successful mod- el of employer-driven youth development training pro- gram" by the U.S. Depart- ment of Labor. The precision machining course at Pike Central High School is taught by VU in- structor Mark Scott.
