B-6 Sports Wednesday, April 20, 2016 The Press-Dispatch LAUREN MORTON Morton, a sophomore member of the Oakland City University softball team, went 2-for-4 and scored one run as the Lady Oaks de- feated visiting Robert Mor- ris University-Springfield (Ill.) 7-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. Morton, who graduat- ed from Pike Central High School in 2014, started at catcher, totaling four put- outs and two assists as Oak- land City. Morton reached on a field- er's choice grounder in the first inning and scored on a two-run single by third base- man Allie Minton that gave the Lady Oaks a 4-0 lead. Morton led off the fourth inning with a single and ad- vanced to second on a sacri- fice bunt by pitcher Corbin McCrary, but was left stranded there when desig- nated player Bre Huff lined out to shortstop and Minton grounded out to end the in- ning. In the second game of the twinbill – a 1-0 win by Robert Morris University-Spring- field (Ill.) – Morton started at catcher and went 0 -for-3 with one strikeout while re- cording seven putouts. Morton, who has start- ed 14 games at catcher, two games at designated play- er and one game at third base, is currently batting .322 with nine runs scored and eight runs batted in. She has three extra-base hits – two doubles and a home run. Defensively, Morton has re- corded 41 putouts and 10 assists with two errors for a fielding percentage of .962. Next: The Lady Oaks (10 -15), who hosted Brescia University (Ky.) on Mon- day, April 18, will host Bel- larmine University (Ky.) on Wednesday, April 20, then play at University of Cincin- nati-Clermont (Ohio) on Sat- urday, April 23, and at Mid- way College (Ky.) on Tues- day, April 26, before clos- ing out the regular season at home against Crowley's Ridge College (Ark.) on Sat- urday, April 30. STEPHANIE RICHARDSON Richardson, a sophomore member of the St. Mary-of- the-Woods College softball team, picked up three wins as the Pomeroys won five of six games last week. Richardson, who graduat- ed from Pike Central High School in 2014, started at pitcher on Tuesday, April 12, in the second game of a doubleheader against vis- iting Missouri Baptist Col- lege and allowed one hit and walked one while hurl- ing four shutout innings in a 2-0 victory. On Saturday, April 16, Richardson started at pitch- er in the second game of a doubleheader against vis- iting Cleary University (Mich.), allowing two runs – both earned – on eight hits while striking out three in a complete-game 6 -2 victory. On Sunday, April 17, Rich- ardson started at pitcher in the second game of a dou- bleheader against visiting MacMurray College (Ill.), allowing one run – which was earned – on eight hits while walking one and strik- ing out four in a complete- game 4-3 victory. Through Sunday, April 17, Richardson was 9 -1 with two saves and an earned run average of 2.42. She had al- lowed 26 runs – 23 of which were earned – on 68 hits in 66 -2/3 innings while walk- ing 15 and striking out 43. Defensively, Richardson – who was batting .333 with 10 hits in 30 at-bats – had 11 put-outs and 17 assists in 30 total chances for a fielding percentage of .933. Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge seeking summer workers The Patoka River National Wild- life Refuge (NWR) will tentatively sponsor a Youth Conservation Corps ( YCC) employment program for the summer of 2016, based on funding availability, Refuge Manager William McCoy has announced. The eight-week educational work program would run from June 6 to Ju- ly 29, is for young men and women, 15 through 18 years of age. Participants must reside within either Pike or Gib- son counties as Patoka River NWR is located in both counties. The purpose of the YCC program is to further the development and main- tenance of the natural resources of the United States while providing gainful employment for America's youth. Pa- toka River NWR hosted YCC crews from 2009 through 2015. The crews performed numerous work assign- ments from surveying wildlife popu- lations, posting boundary signs, con- trolling invasive plant species, paint- ing observation decks and kiosks, and picking up roadside trash. The experience will also include environmental education opportuni- ties. Participants will do hard physical work and will be exposed to insects, poison ivy, adverse weather and diffi- cult working conditions. Enrollee's pay will be the estab- lished Federal minimum wage rate, which is presently $7.25 per hour. Work will consist of 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Central time. All YCC enrollees are required to have Federal salary payments made by di- rect deposit to a personal account of a financial institution of their choosing. Applications must be received no later than 4:30 p.m., Central time, on Monday, April 25, at refuge head- quarters in Oakland City. Four appli- cants will be selected for employment in a random drawing held on Tuesday, April 26, at 9 a.m., Central time, at ref- uge headquarters.
