Dana, you can huff up if you want to, but I'm tell- ing you all. There's not a per- son in this room or at any of these libraries ... that's more qualified to do his job than that man right there." "Because he's got a piece of paper," Dana's husband, James, replied. "And the education to go with it," Marilyn Dickerson said. "I'm telling you, we get rid of him, we'll never get anoth- er director," Jim Dickerson continued. "We're the laugh- ingstock of all the counties around here. Before we got Mr. Stinson, I talked to a li- brary director in a neighbor- ing county, and she told me, 'I've got a person here that's got all the qualifications, and they said they wouldn't go to Pike County on a bet.' Because of the way that the board does." "Now I want to tell you, when I was first appointed to this board almost eight years ago, I enjoyed this board," he added. "This board has went completely berserk." Weathers said that she had no problem with Stin- son "as director." "I have a problem with him not doing his job," Weathers said. "His job is to do whatev- er he wants you to do," Jim Dickerson replied. "He passes his jobs off to us," Weathers said. "What's the meaning of 'director? '" Jim Dicker- son fired back. "What's the meaning of 'director,' Pat? " "That's the reason I didn't take it," Weathers replied. Elkins subsequently con- cluded the grievance hear- ing, asking three times if anyone on the board want- ed to make a motion to re- move Ropp as president. Hearing no motion, El- kins suggested that the board schedule a special- called meeting for Mon- day, April 18, to make a fi- nal determination regarding Stinson's grievance against Ropp. Later in the meeting, Stin- son made the request for permission to advertise for a new library director. "Bart," Rund said. "Are the bridges so great that we can't work together, because I sure would hate to lose you, and I don't want to lose staff, either, because they're mar- velous. I don't know what all has happened here. All I know is what I read in the pa- per, and it's scathing." "That's all everybody knows," McCrary said. "I've sat and listened to what your projects are, and moving this library forward, and being from a neighbor- ing county, I come to this li- brary because I live so close and I love this library," Rund said. "I'd hate to see another good director leave. I really do. And I don't know if bridg- es can be ... you're over there shaking your head. That's what concerns me." "Mary," McCrary replied. "You don't know everything that's going on." "Are you sure this is con- crete? " Jim Dickerson asked Stinson. "You're sure." "Yeah," Stinson replied. Jim Dickerson then hand- ed out a pair of envelopes – one to Stinson and one to Ropp. "As I said earlier, this board has been good in the past, and it's not very good right now, I don't think," Jim Dickerson said. "That's my opinion. And the letter there tells you that I'm resigning for personal reasons, as of tonight. I'm done." Elkins made the motion to authorize Stinson to adver- tise for a new director, which was seconded by board member Donna Poehlein. However, the initial vote was a tie, as Elkins and Poehlein voted in favor of the motion and Ficklin and Jim Dicker- son voted against it, while Ropp abstained. "It doesn't go anywhere," Elkins said. "It's a tie." "I thought the reason we had seven members on this board was so there couldn't be a tie, and if there is a tie, the board president votes to break the tie," Jim Dicker- son said. "If I vote, Jim, I don't want anybody to say, 'Well, he vot- ed against Bart,'" Ropp said. "I don't want that said. But in order to break the tie, I will go ahead and vote in favor of the motion to allow him to advertise ... if that's his will, and he wants to go ahead and do so." On Wednesday, April 13, Ficklin announced that she was also resigning from the library board "effective im- mediately." "Serving on the library board is a great responsibil- ity and I take the duties of being a board member very seriously," Ficklin wrote. "I am no longer able to give the time and commitment nec- essary to fulfill my duties as a board member. I feel it best that I make room for a new board member with the time to devote to the job of mov- ing the library forward." On Monday, April 18, the remaining four members – Ropp, Elkins, Poehlein and Robin Whaley – held a spe- cial-called meeting and vot- ed to dispose of Stinson's grievance against Ropp with a "joint agreement." LIBRARY Continued from page 4 Booth arrested on intimidation charge By Andy Heuring A Petersburg man was arrested after police were called by his family mem- bers who claimed he threat- ened to kill them. Patrick Glenn Booth, 24, of 904 N. Liberty Ave., Pe- tersburg was arrested on a preliminary charge of intim- idation. Petersburg Police Sgt. Chad McClellan said he was sent to Liberty Apart- ments after a neighbor re- ported Booth was yelling and screaming and threat- ening to kill his mother and others. Sgt. McClellan said when he drove up he saw a juvenile relative of Booths running away from the apartments and crying. Sgt. McClellan said the juvenile said Booth threatened him. Booth's mother Julie Ward then walked over to them. Ac- cording to McClellan, Ward said Booth became agitated when she asked him to turn down a radio in her car and he started beating the dash- board and screaming. According to a probable cause affidavit, Ward denied Booth had threatened to kill her or the juvenile. However the girlfriend of the juvenile said Booth had threatened to kill Ward. Booth had left the area and borrowed his grandpar- ents' vehicle. McClellan said when Booth returned with his grandparents' car he was taken into custody on an in- timidation charge.
