Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School softball team rallied from a 5 -1 deficit to take a 6 - 5 lead before host Loogootee scored three runs in the sixth inning for an 8 -6 victory on Thursday, April 7. A two-run double by right fielder Breigh Lamar and a two-run single by shortstop Sydney Davis gave the Lady Lions a 4-0 lead in the first inning. A fter an RBI-single by junior left field- er Sydney Brooks in the second inning cut the deficit to 4-1, Pike Central loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third inning. Following an infield fly by Lady Char- gers sophomore second baseman Audra Stone, senior first baseman Samantha Hal- brader hit a fly ball that Loogootee's Cal- li Wininger caught in shallow centerfield for the second out of the inning. Pike Central sophomore Shelbi Pipes – who had doubled to lead off the inning – attempted to tag up and score on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. "I said, 'You're going to tag if it's in the air, but you're going to watch where the ball's hit'," Lady Chargers head coach Rick Weisman said. "The ball's at the infield, at the grass, and we're going to score on that one? You've just got to be smart right there." Loogootee extended its lead to 5 -1 in the bottom of the third inning when Lamar – who doubled with one out and advanced to third on a single by Sydney Davis – scored on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Paige Walton. Pike Central got the run back in the fourth inning when sophomore rightfield- er Demi Croak doubled, advanced to third on a single by sophomore pitcher Peyton Sorgius and scored on a single by sopho- more third baseman Jalah Barnes. Drop 12-1 loss to Princeton in Wood Bat Invitational championship game By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Junior Colton White got the job done on the mound, in the field, at the plate and on the basepaths to lead the Pike Central High School baseball team to an eight-inning 8 -4 victory over Evansville Bosse in the opening round of the Wood Bats Invitational hosted by Princeton at Gil Hodges Field on Saturday, April 9. White started and pitched seven innings, allowing four runs – one of which was earned – on five hits while walking one and striking out 10. At the plate, White had three hits – including a one- out double to spark the Chargers' game-winning four- run rally in the top of the eighth inning – while scor- ing three runs and stealing one base. White also proved flawless in the field, recording three assists on three put-outs at first base while mak- ing a running, tumbling catch of a foul pop-up at the start of the sixth inning. White's teammates, meanwhile, weren't much help in the field, however, as they committed six errors – including two by freshman third baseman Brennon Benton and one each by sophomore second baseman Quade Claridge and freshman shortstop Race Britton – on 10 hit balls that White did not handle himself. "There's a lot of freshmen and sophomores that were in the infield today," White said. "That's going to happen. Nerves get to them. And it's cold out here, too." "I thought Colton White just took over," said Pike Central head coach Josh McDonald. "He was right- fully frustrated with some of the plays, so any play he Winslow Sports Leagues to hold opening day parade Saturday Loogootee rallies past Lady Chargers, 8-6 See WHITE on page 2 See PAST on page 3 WHITE LEADS CHARGERS TO 8-4 WIN OVER EVANSVILLE BOSSE Pike Central High School junior Colton O'Neal (right) gets back to first base ahead of the tag by Evansville Bosse's Xavier Nienaber (left) during the Wood Bats Invitational host- ed by Princeton at Gil Hodges Field on Saturday, April 9.
