Cody Nalley Erica Gaines Amber Dixon Danielle Williams Kailee Russell Samantha Halbrader Kirstin Asbell Noah Benson Whitney Hartke Noah Croak Nicolle Heaton Alexandria Baumgart Amber Ruble Erika Higgs Lacey Murray Kaylee Gray Katherine Young Earl Townsend V Price of school lunches going up next year By Ed Cahill The cost of school lunch- es will be increasing by 10 cents for Pike County stu- dents during the 2016 -17 school year. During its regular month- ly meeting on Monday, April 11, the Pike County School Corporation's Board of Trustees voted unanimously – albeit reluctantly – to adopt a mandate by the U.S. De- partment of Agriculture to up the cost of school lunch- es for elementary school stu- dents from $2.05 to $2.15 and the cost of school lunch- es for high school students from $2.35 to $2.45. In addition, the cost of lunches for adults will in- crease from $2.80 to $2.90. However, the cost of school breakfasts – $1.50 for students and $1.75 for adults – will remain the same. "What's the reasoning be- hind this? " board member Chris Satterfield inquired. "The USDA says we're not charging enough to offset what our expenses are," Su- perintendent of Schools Su- zanne Blake replied. "Bot- tom line, we've got to do it if we still want to receive the reimbursement from them." "This has to be done," Satterfield said. "Again, Big Brother taking care of the little guy." "I move we approve – out of necessity," board presi- dent Dave Waltz said. "I'll second out of necessi- ty," Satterfield said. In other business, the board voted to accept a bid submitted by Kieffer Broth- ers Construction of Mt. Car- mel, Ill., for work at the Pike Central wastewater treat- ment plant. Derick Wiggins of Mid- western Engineers, Inc., reported that the bid sub- mitted by Kieffer Brothers Construction was $256,654, approximately $150,000 low- er than the only other bid, which was submitted by PPMI Construction Co. of Evansville. "We have experience on oth- er projects with Kieffer Broth- ers, and we would recommend that you award the contract to them," Wiggins said. "They're a reputable company, and they do good work." Wiggins said that Kieffer Brothers Construction is ex- pecting to start work around the first of June, and is ex- pected to have the project completed by the start of the 2016 -17 school year. "I know we've been telling all the coaches – for athlet- ic camps, summer practic- es and things – to make ar- rangements at the elementa- ries," Blake said. The school board also ap- proved a request by the cor- poration's technology direc- tor, Phil Clauss, to purchase 10 carts of Chromebooks for Pike Central High School from RTI at a cost of $77,100. "We're trying to move to- ward a 1-to-1 environment," Blake said. "We also know that some of the devices can be shared among classrooms." In addition, Blake updat- ed the school board on var- ious fund balances, which, as of March 31, were: Gen- eral Fund – $1,792,285.98; Debt Service Fund – $75,294.24; Retirement/ Severance Bond Debt – $21,761.59; Capital Proj- ects Fund – $402,250.35; Transportation Operating Fund – $1,398,679.80 ; and Bus Replacement Fund – $257,887.19.
