SIAR PRICE REDUCED PRICE REDUCED IDEAS AND COIN COLLECTING ON THE CHEAP By Brian Paul Kaufman Press-Dispatch Staff Writer bkaufman@pressdispatch.net Looking for something to do with your son when it's too rainy for football and you've worn a hole in your "Facing the Giants" DVD? Try coin collecting. Make no mistake, my son Jordan and I aren't numis- matists by any measure, but we've both been able to create decent small col- lections while spending next to nothing. Best of all, it's good guy time togeth- er. Here are a few things we've learned along the way if you want to give it a try: BUY A RED BOOK Before anything else, you'll want to pick up a copy of The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of Unit- ed States Coins 2016. This handy volume provides all the details a beginner needs to rate coins, deter- mine their values and even has interesting facts about how they were minted. For example, many coins car- ry tiny initials called mint marks that indicate where they were struck. P is for Philadelphia, while D is for Denver and S is for San Francisco. The fewer the coins minted during a certain year at a certain location, and you might have one that's more valu- able. And if the mint mark is somehow damaged or in- correct, the coin is worth even more. Jordan is great at spotting these. He's my "eagle eye." TAKE A TRIP TO THE BANK Ready to really improve your chances? Depend- ing on how much time you want to spend, bring a few dollars to the bank and ask for penny rolls. At .50 cents a roll, you'll get 10 for five bucks – enough change to keep you care- fully looking for winners for an entire Sunday after- noon. You probably won't get rich with what you find, a rough average value is between 20 and 40 cents, but you never know. A 1909 S VDB Wheatie Lin- coln cent could be worth close to $1,000 even in av- erage condition. Hunting for wheaties is also good for beginners because you'll almost always find at least a few, which encour- ages you to keep trying. Oh, and be sure to ask the bank for extra paper wrap- pers. You'll need them. CHECK YOUR CHANGE Now that you're armed with some information about what to look for, the easiest place to start is your own pocket or pig- gybank. They're harder to find now, but you'll some- times get "Wheaties" in your change. These are Lincoln cents from 1909 to 1956 with "wheat ears" on the back instead of the fa- miliar Lincoln Monument. BRING THEM BACK A fter you've re-rolled your pennies, you'll want to take them back to the bank for another attempt. This time, however, you might want to try getting a roll or two of nickels, dimes, quarters or half dol- lars. Dimes, quarters and half dollars minted before 1965 were 90 percent sil- ver. From 1965 to 1970, Kennedy half dollars went from 90 percent silver to 40 percent — while silver was eliminated from dimes and quarters. Needless to say, these silver coins are more valuable even if they're in poor condition, since silver is now trading at over $15 an ounce. And you might be shocked at what you find: during one bank trip, we got three silver half dol- lars in just one roll, an all- time high for us. EXPERIMENT ONLINE This can get a little tricky, but there are col- lectors and companies who sell rolls, bags and even barrels of "rare" coins on- line. Many promise a cer- tain number of Indian heads, wheaties or other rarities per purchase. We bought three .50 cent rolls in an eBay auction and got three Indian head pen- nies and a few others that helped our collections. But after doing the math, we discovered we had slight- ly overpaid. The key: set an average price you want to spend per coin, add it up and stick to your guns. BE WILLING TO SHARE A fter Jordan shared some of his "wheatie dou- bles" with a friend his age, the two began discussing their finds at length on the phone. At some point, his friend's aunt learned of their shared interest and as it turns out, had put away a few coins her- self. The result: Jordan (and even dad) got a fan- tastic price on some Mer- cury dimes — a unique, sil- ver coin produced between 1916 to 1945. VISIT A COIN STORE Since we love small busi- nesses, we'd be remiss not to mention the real collec- tors among us. Even if you can't afford to buy coins to build your collection, you can purchase card- board and plastic holders, sheets and albums from a coin store that you'll need to protect and display your finds. And even if you aren't going to collect yourself, buying a birthday year "proof set" — coins struck specifically for col- lectors that haven't been circulated — might be just what a youngster needs to spark their interest and get them started on a fun, fam- ily hobby.
