TEMMER Start With Trust. An interesting idea. At the Better Business Bureau, we have this saying on our website, business cards and just about every piece of paper in the office. Our mission is to increase trust in the mar- ketplace. Today I'd like to examine trust in a larger setting. Trust: "assured reliance on the charac- ter, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something" is the bedrock of society. We work together, we live together, we build societies together only if we trust each other. I trust my friends and family to treat me with honesty. I trust the police and fire departments will respond if called. I trust my employer will give me a paycheck if I complete my work. I trust everything I see in the media. I trust the government is always working in my best interest. Hmm, not so easy. Trust is fluid and can be lost. We are all imperfect humans that make mistakes. If we look into our own experience we can eas- ily find examples of broken and repaired trust. We have an innate sense of trust. We know right and wrong and we know when apologies and forgiveness are needed. The cycle goes from trust to error to apology and correction to forgiveness and back to trust. The problem is that in today's society, that cycle is broken. Cynicism has replaced trust. Instead of apologies we get lies, cover-ups and stonewalling. Forgiveness has been exchanged with moral outrage and righteous indignation. We have thrown aside coopera- tion, compromise and collaboration in the search for power. We are told that we should not apologize because it shows weakness. We should not forgive because we lose our superior position over the other side. Only ignorant fools trust. We are swimming in a sea of rage. Watch television, look at social media, everyone is angry, everyone has been wronged and nobody apologizes or forgives. The American melting pot has become a boiling caldron ready to explode. So, what do we do? Ignore our own guilt, blame it on "the other side" and hang onto our indignation? That doesn't seem to be working too well. I might be oversimplifying things but here is the beginning of a solu- tion: Start with trust. Mahatma Gandhi said, "be the change you want to see in the world." We can start changing the world by first changing our own hearts. My son Andy and his classmates gradu- ated this month. Adding to the advice they received in commencement speeches, I humbly suggest this: If you are wrong, apol- ogize and correct your behavior. Graciously offer forgiveness. Trust each other and you will change the world. (James D. Temmer of Cedarburg is presi- dent/CEO of Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin. Interested in finding out how BBB can help you? Trust, forgiveness will build better world Start with trust Modine to sell South African business operation RACINE — Modine Manufacturing Company announced Monday it has signed an agreement to sell its South American business operation, AIAC Air Conditioning South Africa (Pty) Ltd., to the current man- agement team, headed by Andrew Koeslag. With its base in Johannesburg, South Africa, AIAC Air Conditioning South Africa, Ltd. focuses on the manufacture of precision air conditioning systems. Its fis- cal 2017 sales were just under $3 million, according to the announcement. "As we continue to strategically shape the make-up of our Building HVAC group, at Modine, we feel the local South African market will be best served by a business with complete local ownership," said Scott Miller, vice president — Building HVAC. Based in Racine, Modine, with fiscal 2018 revenues of $2.1 billion, specializes in ther- mal management systems and components. REV Group's revenue grows 11.7% for second quarter MILWAUKEE — While the REV Group's revenue may have increased in the second quarter by 11.7 percent compared to the same period last year, CEO Tim Sullivan said it was beneath the company's expecta- tions. "In particular, cost inflation across many of the commodities and services we buy was significant in the quarter and due to the length of our backlogs we were not able to mitigate these increases," Sullivan said. "We estimate the cost inflation will have an approximate $19 million impact on our current fiscal year." Temmer
