4 • Milwaukee County Post • June 15, 2018 Make-A-Wish announces donation milestone MILWAUKEE — Make-A-Wish Wisconsin announced it surpassed $300,000 in all-time donations for its Wheels for Wishes campaign. "A wish experience brings families back together, giving children new energy and resolve and restoring normalcy to their lives," said Patti Gorsky, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Wisconsin, in a June 7 news release. "On behalf of wish families, volun- teers, the Board of Directors and Make-A-Wish Wisconsin staff, we thank you for your heartfelt commitment to the Make-A-Wish mission." Since 2010, Wheels For Wishes has been making donations to local Make-A-Wish chap- ters like Make-A-Wish Wisconsin to better the lives of kids needing wishes. Through the proceeds from car donations to Wheels For Wishes, Make-A-Wish Wisconsin has been able to grant wishes to kids, like meeting their idols such as Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers and WWE star and actor John Cena. "Wheels For Wishes looks forward to continuing our great support of Make-A-Wish Wisconsin to further promote our goal to assist those who help make dreams come true for every Wisconsin child facing critical illness," said Loren Dorshow, executive director of the Car Donation Foundation, in the release. WEEK IN REVIEW STATE AND LOCAL STORIES OF INTEREST Drug-free coalition targets violence in Harambee MILWAUKEE — The Harambee 53212 ... Pulling Together Drug-Free Community Coalition kicked off its movement "PEACE on tha East" last week with the help of civic leaders and residents at Victory Over Violence Park, 2601 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The idea is to change the dynamics from tolerance of drug use and violence to drug prevention and peace. Using the acronym PEACE for Protect, Educate, Aid Children Everywhere, the group intends to focus on strengthening the neighborhood by partnering with law enforcement, local elected officials, WestCare Wisconsin Youth Action Council, non- profit and youth servicing organizations, businesses, media, local faith-based organi- zations and the Harambee residents, according to a news release. The WestCare Wisconsin Youth Action Council thanked Master Lock for donating 1,000 gun locks for the second year in a row. MPD: Trio of weekend shootings investigated MILWAUKEE — Police said they are investigating three separate shootings that occurred on Saturday and early Sunday: ■ A 19-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in the 600 block of West Becher Street at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday. The circumstances behind the shooting are still under investigation, however, three subjects have been taken into custody and a gun has been recovered. ■ A 19-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in the 2800 block of North 49th Street at about 5 p.m. Saturday. It appeared the victim was in a fight with a group of people and police were looking for the suspects. ■ A 16-year-old boy suffered a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday, most likely in the 900 block of West Scott Street, however investigators are still looking into the exact circumstances behind this incident. State nets more than $227M in new transportation funds MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin is slated to receive $227.4 million in new federal funding for the state's roads and bridges during fiscal year 2018, according to a press release issued by Gov. Scott Walker's office. The funding, which is reportedly the largest Infrastructure For Rebuilding America grant the state has ever received, is expected to provide "a significant boost that will be used to advance more transportation projects across the entire state," the release states. "Our plan is to invest in more highway projects, nearly 50 more local bridge projects, and complete the I-94 North-South project years ahead of schedule with this funding," Walker said in the release. "This is great news for Wisconsin. Not only are we keeping projects on time, we're actually going to be able to do more projects across the state and get them done faster." The additional funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation is slated to include $160 million for the I-94 North-South project that will be used to complete the project in 2021, 11 years ahead of schedule, the release states. The added funding also includes $67.4 million in supplemental highway funds and redistribution funds, $30 million of which is expected to fund 49 more local bridge proj- ects throughout the state, the release states. Police investigate two unrelated shootings minutes apart MILWAUKEE — Police said they are investigating two separate shooting incidents that happened early June 8. A 28-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at about 12:15 a.m. in the 1900 block of South Fifth Place, police said. The second shooting occurred in the 1800 block of West Mitchell Street at about 12:20 a.m., police reported. A 53-year-old man showed up at a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police said they are investigating the shootings. Police arrest man for East Side home invasion MILWAUKEE — Police said three suspects approached victims and at gun point forced them inside a home in the 1500 block of North Humboldt Avenue at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday, stealing several items. One suspect, a 27-year-old man, was taken into custody, and police said they were looking for other suspects in the ongoing investigation. Deputies rescue suicidal woman from freeway overpass MILWAUKEE — Deputies brought a 21-year-old suicidal woman to safety after she had begun to bring both legs over the Interstate 41-Highway 45 bridge near Wisconsin Avenue, the Sheriff's Office reported. She called 911 at about 3:45 p.m. June 7, said she was on a bridge over the freeway and was going to kill herself, then hung up and did not answer calls from dispatchers, the Sheriff's Office said. Deputies said she was straddling the freeway overpass railing when they arrived. She was admitted to the Psychiatric Crisis Center for treatment, the Sheriff's Office said.
