After learning that his estranged father had died on skid-row, he resolved to make better choices. He returned to school, spent seven years in the Army and then moved to Chicago, where he worked his way up the corporate ladder before opening his own companies. He is a justice on the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, former presiding justice of the Fifth Division and former chair of the First District's Settlement Conference Committee. He has been a judge since 1997, having previously served as both an associate judge and elected judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Before his election to the bench, he worked with the Law Department of the Chicago Board of Education and the Corporation Counsel's Offi ce for the City of Chicago. EDUARDO G. In 1994 he launched San Jose Trading to import confectionary items to the U.S. He later developed a wholesale line of candy, Dulces Del Sol, and opened eight DulceLandia Candy Stores. He also owns Lobo de Mar Restaurant and Banquets in Pilsen, which offers authentic Mexican cuisine and seafood. Rodriguez serves on a number of boards and Chicago organizations. There she led the nonprofi t's comprehensive child care, school-age, youth and adult programs, helping 5,000 people create better lives for themselves and their families each year. In December 2015 she was named CEO of the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois following a competitive nationwide search. Roldán has long worked to strengthen community action and civic engagement. She is a board member of the National Council of La Raza and the City of Chicago's Community Development Commission. In his current role, he has developed more than 4,100 affordable apartments and townhomes for families and elderly residents of predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods. In addition, he has initiated the development of more than 82,000 square feet of retail and offi ce space in fi ve local developments and directed the formation of a property management division, which currently manages more than 3,600 residential units throughout the Midwest. Roldán also planned and organized Affordable Community Energy, an energy services company targeting affordable housing. JESSE H. At Drinker, Biddle, he counsels and represents clients on a range of corporate governance and investment matters, and outside of the fi rm, he has long been active in Chicago civic life. In 2016, Ruiz became the president of the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners. He previously served as vice president of the Chicago Board of Education, as interim CEO of Chicago Public Schools, and as chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education. He is legal counsel to the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus and a graduate of U Chicago Law. JOSÉ R. SÁNCHEZ, President and CEO Entity: Norwegian American Hospital Website: www. nahospital.org José Sánchez, a licensed social worker, took over as CEO of Norwegian American Hospital in 2010 when it was nearing bankruptcy. He steered the organization into the black, where it has remained for the last fi ve years, fi xed a number of operational problems, and fostered trust among local doctors and patients. Emergency room visits have risen dramatically and the hospital now has expanded cardiology, oncology and gastrointestinal services. He is committed to pursuing collaborative and innovative solutions to combat local healthcare challenges and improve the quality of services provided to more than 112,000 Norwegian American Hospital patients each year. Before becoming lieutenant governor, Sanguinetti served as a member of the Wheaton City Council from 2012 to 2014. She holds a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Florida International University and a law degree from John Marshall Law School, where she has worked as an adjunct professor. She was an assistant attorney general under former Republican Illinois Attorney General James E. Ryan and went on to practice at a private law fi rm in Chicago. CityofChicago.org Chicago-born Jose Santiago distinguished himself in the Marines before retiring after 31 years and joining the Chicago Fire Department, where he manages nearly 5,000 sworn members with an annual budget of $621 million. He was named executive director of Chicago's Offi ce of Emergency Management and Communications in 2010, a role in which he oversaw all police, fi re and emergency medical services dispatches and execution of the city's disaster plan as well as Homeland Security planning and operations. When Santiago was appointed fi re commissioner in 2012, he became the fi rst commissioner to hold every rank within the department. JUAN SALGADO, Chancellor Entity: Chicago City College Website: www. ccc.edu Juan Salgado has focused his 20-year career on improving education and economic opportunities for residents in low-income communities. As chancellor, he oversees Chicago's community college system, serving more than 90,000 students across seven colleges. From 2001 to 2017, he served as CEO of Instituto del Progreso Latino, where he worked to empower residents of Chicago's Southwest Side through education, citizenship, and skill- building programs that led to sustainable employment and economic stability. He is nationally recognized and, in 2015, received the "MacArthur Genius" award, one of the most prestigious innovation prizes in the United States. CARLOS TORTOLERO, founder and president Entity: National Museum of Mexican Art Website: national museumof mexicanart.org Carlos Tortolero is founder and president of the National Museum of Mexican Art, the nation's largest Latino arts organization and the only Latino museum accredited by the American Association of Museums. Tortolero spent 12 years as a teacher, counselor and administrator in Chicago Public School and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University. In 2009, he was appointed trustee of the University of Illinois. He is the co-author of Mexican Chicago, a photo history book of the Mexican community, and he has written articles for national and international publications and won numerous awards. As founder and executive director of the International Latino Cultural Center, he fosters the understanding of Latino culture through the universal language of the arts by showing, through cultural expressions, that Latinos are defi ned by more than 20 different nationalities and they come from all social and racial backgrounds. In 1985, with a budget of $10,000, an audience of 500 and 14 fi lms projected on a wall, Vargas launched the Chicago Latino Film Festival, which has evolved into the largest and best Latino fi lm festival in the United States and Chicago's biggest International Latino cultural event.
