The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, April 4, 2018 C-13 SCHOOL Submit school news: Email: schoolnews@pressdispatch.net Deadline: Noon on Friday Petersburg Elementary Otwell Miller Academy Pike Central Mr. Mason's sixth grade social studies class used a longitude and latitude grid to pinpoint and outline South America. After completing the grid, stu- dents added the countries, their capital cities, oceans, rivers, lakes, and oth- er important landmarks before coloring the maps. Pictured from left to right are students in 4th Period; Hannah Mosby, Breanna Britton, Haylie Ful- cher, Skieley Murray, Brailey Mills, and Hannah Fort. Above: Axel Nalley and Kole Aydelott made Cat in the Hat puppets for Dr. Suess' birthday. Left: Abby Aldridge's students conducted some weathering experiments. As a comparison to rocks rolling down a mountain, the students shook sugar cubes in a container to see the ef- fects of weathering and erosion. Tre Dickerson is counting the number of edges on their cube while Emily Warner records the amount. Below: Briar Thomas and Sydney Burdette are examining the shapes of their cubes after 200 shakes in the container. Above: Deb Smith's classroom students pose for a picture with their Dr. Suess hats they made. Below: Brynna Thompson and Kaliea Hartke are discussing what to write about the effects of shaking the cubes during their weathering exper- iment. Above and right: On Thursday, March 20, Brit- tney Lohmiller, a photographer from The Herald, gave an excellent presentation to the fifth and third graders at Otwell Miller Academy. She show- cased cameras and lenses, discussed the critical role a newspaper played in getting the foundation for the Statue of Liberty completed, and let the students look through the different lenses. She also talked to them about what type of classes to take in high school and college in order to be- come a photographer. Also, students use Verni- er LabQuests and Chromebooks to test the pH of solutions. Left: The fifth graders at Otwell Miller Academy celebrated pi day on March 14 (pi = 3.14 rounded). They created a circle, then lined it with string. They measured the string to find the circumference of the circle. Then they divided C by pi (3.14) to find the diameter. Then they divided the circumference by the diameter and came up with pi. Below: OMA fifth graders created Irish Knots for St. Patrick's Day on March 17.
