My best friend of 26 years passed away from complications due to MS. In honor of her, I am putting in one of her favorite recipes that I used to make. We would curl up on the couch, watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas and chow down on taco dip. It's only a few ingredients and takes just minutes to make. She was the life of the party and you will be too with this dish. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 16 oz. cream cheese • 16 oz. sour cream • 2 packages taco seasoning • 1-2 cups shredded cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS 1. In a 2 quart casserole dish, beat the cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. 2. Add in the taco seasoning, mix well. 3. Smooth the dip into the bottom of the casserole dish. 4. Top with cheese and serve with tortilla chips. Winslow Patoka Riv- er, from all of the rain we had the end of March 24 to the 30, is over its banks and overflowed into the Riv- erside Park on Wednesday, March 28. By now there may be more floods again. It has rained almost everyday for a whole week, and it looks like the rain will continue into the month of April. The weathermen have said it will be raining on Easter, and if it does, we will have rain for the next six Sundays afterwards, according to an old saying. April is the rainy month anyway, but our yards are full of puddles or lakes now. As the rhyme goes, "Rain, rain go away, come again another day," and we might add "come again this summer when we need it more." I mentioned that it has rained and on March 24, at the benefit for Donnie Pancake, it rained and even hailed for a short time also. The ben- efit was a really big hit, with lots of meals going out. Lots of stars came in to eat and enjoy the music by To- ny Rothrock and Jerry Willis. Several items were donated for the silent auc- tion where Henry Nelson called out the stars who won their bid. We had many groups who helped out all day long, and Rosie was a hit with all the kids. We don't know how much mon- ey has come in for Donnie, but we all hope it has helped out with his ex- penses and recovery. Donnie, I would like to say that we all had a great time and we enjoyed doing this event for you and all you do for Pike County. I want to apologize for the word 'fu- neral' that was added to the informa- tion in my March 21 column about the Donnie Pancake benefit. Donnie Pan- cake is ALIVE. Editor's note: The word 'funeral' was inadvertently added by mistake when the column was being typed for publication. The error was not Mrs. Sweet's fault. We saw our daughter, Laura, for a few nights and then she was off to work again. It was nice to see her even for a few minutes. Terri Ann came down and spent some time with Mom while she was here. Mom went back with George on Satur- day, March 31. She couldn't get out to see who she want- ed to this time, but she will spend sometime here again when it's not rainy and cold. Our 41-year anniversary on March 6 was really great, and it didn't rain until the evening, so we got to eat out in Princeton, shop for some need- ed and not needed items, had cof- fee with our friends and talk, took a drive around some of the Pike county area, Cato and the Coon Hunters ar- ea, then had pot pies with Mom and Laura. Norm and I loved our day to- gether and had quite a few wishes from all our friends. We even got a bag of potting soil from Sherry at Pe- tersburg Hardware for loving this guy (Norm) for all these years. To everyone who gave us wishes, we thank you so much. One of the ways to have a life together like us is just love each other like you did when you first got marries. I still love this guy Norm with all my heart, he is my everything and so he has said I am his everything. How about an- other 41 years, Norm? Well, Easter isn't here yet to write about, because this is Friday, March 30, so the Eater egg hunts may have been done in Winslow and Easter Sunday. We hope it was a grand day for all our stars. Hope your family has loads of fun seeing the young- sters find those eggs you or the Eas- ter bunny hid in the yard. We also hope all our stars had an enjoyable day with family and friends to share this day that Jesus arose from the grave for all of us. As the lights begin to dim on these ramblings of Winslow, keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see the beauty all around your neck of the woods. Kids are back to school, so watch out for stopped bus- es and kids. Did you all have a good time off? Always smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week. Communication can be a tricky thing. When you add an adolescent with a growing brain and fluctuating emotions to the mix, communication with the goal of balancing freedom for teens and control from caregivers can be a challenge. Here are five points to consider that may help improve communication and your relationship with your teen: CHANGE YOUR MINDSET Being flexible helps. This does not mean we should go against what we believe is best for our children. You should be flexible, however, and try to understand your teen's perspective. Doing this instead of digging in your heels to show "who's boss" will encour- age better flow of communication. ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO GROW UP During adolescence kids go from having their parents as the center of the universe to avoiding them and thinking they're clueless. These reac- tions are perfectly normal. It can be difficult to avoid fighting the quirki- ness of adolescence, but allowing time for your teen to navigate through these changes and grow up to make healthy decisions is part of growing up. Coach- ing rather than micromanaging en- courages kids to maneuver through life while feeling confident they have someone to help them along the way. MAKE EACH MOMENT A TEACHABLE ONE Asking ourselves what real- ly matters during these years can help keep things in perspective. Be present and find those teachable moments. Avoid constant lectures on touchy subjects like schoolwork
