Poplar Street, Petersburg Easter Sunday we celebrate the resurrec- tion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The last few days that Jesus spent with the apostles were hard for Him and hard for us to read and think about, but without the death and res- urrection of Jesus we would have no hope of everlasting life. There are many things about the cruel treatment our Lord went through that was above and beyond nor- mal punishment at that time. Even Judas couldn't stand the torment The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam We often talk about the many changes in our society. Some are good and others are destructive. Our culture has had a bad in- fluence on Christianity. I talk almost daily to pastors who feel there is a lack of com- mitment and a drift from Bible based val- ues. In the first decade of the 21st Century, the church has come under constant attack from the media and, recently, from our poli- ticians. It is no longer one nation under God but what corrupt politicians want. In recent rulings on gay and lesbian marriages and sex education in our schools, we have seen family values disappear. The elite media and liberal politicians have made their favorite pastime bashing Trump and Christians. In this time of decline in morality, the Christian church is still the most power- ful source for love, compassion and service to mankind. When there are hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes and other disasters, the church is there first and is still helping when others have departed. The Catholic and Protestant churches are always on the front line to help those in need. In Haiti, ma- ny years after the earthquake, ma- ny are struggling to survive as thou- sands remain home- less. When most of the news media have departed and gov- ernment organiza- tions are controlled by a corrupt govern- ment, the church is still at work. A fter ma- ny years, American churches are sending teams with food, money and faith to help re- build this devastated country. You can help by sending money and being part of a team to help rebuild churches, orphanages and homes. They need more than shelter, food and medicine. They need the message of the Gospel that offers hope and faith in God. I have been to Haiti many times, and the people are open to the truth of God's Word. The Christian church is the only hope for their future. The Apostle Paul had much that he yearned to teach the Hebrew believers — wonderful truths that would have thrilled their hearts — but these truths were "hard to be uttered," or difficult to explain to them, since they were "dull of hearing." The word "dull" in Heb. 5:11 really means "sloth- ful," or indifferent (as in Heb. 6:12). They were not merely hard of hearing, as we say, but were too lazy, too indifferent, spiritu- ally, to pay attention. They were not suffi- ciently interested. This is always a serious condition in the light of the fact that "God hath spoken," and that disobedience to His Word will be judged (Heb. 1:1,2; 2:1-3). Yet, alas, this is the condition of the professing Church to- day. The great majority of religious peo- ple are not sufficiently interested in what God has said to engage in diligent, prayerful study and, like those of Paul's day, still have to be taught "the first principles" of the Bi- ble. They have remained babes, spiritually, unable to digest anything but "milk," and so remain "unskillful in the Word of righteous- ness" (Heb. 5:12-14). What has brought this condition about? Is it because our Bibles are being burned and the Church persecuted for reading it? Is it because God is unwilling to lead us further into His truth? Most assuredly not. It is be- cause so many men of God in high places no longer have the single passion to know God's Word and to make it known. They could be as greatly used of God in teach- ing the Scriptures as their predecessors Continued on page 2 See MINUTES on 12 See R AMBLINGS on 12 RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. There are two ways of get- ting out of a trial. One is sim- ply try to get rid of the tri- al and be thankful when it is over. The other is to recog- nize the trial as a challenge from God and to claim a larger blessing than we ev- er had. Sometimes God removes our trial, and it isn't neces- sarily wrong to ask Him to do that. But often the trials remain, and when they do, we should accept them and ask God to teach us from them. Peter Marshall once put it, "God will not permit troubles to come upon us, unless He has a specific plan by which great blessing can come out of the difficulty." It is through suffering, the tests and trials of life, that we can draw near to God. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Your presence will be deeply ap- preciated and I am sure you will enjoy the blessings of God.
