"I felt the girls did a great job for the first meet of the year," La- dy Chargers head coach Ryne Bi- esterveld said. "We have had a limited number of outdoor prac- tices due to weather. It was a chilly and soggy night. It was the first time in nearly 12 years of coaching track I had seen the discus throw canceled because of weather." "Tecumseh also does not have pole vault, so we had a couple By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The third out proved to be elusive when the Pike Central High School baseball team opened its season with a 12-1 loss at Wash- ington on Friday, March 30. Ten of the Hatchets' runs were scored with two outs, including every one in an eight-run fourth inning during which 11 straight batters reached base – six on walks, three on errors, one as a hit batter, and one with a hit. "One thing that we've got to figure out this year is getting that third out," Char- gers head coach Josh McDonald said. "In all the innings, we've got to figure a way to finish them out." "It seems like they give up after two outs," McDonald added. "We can't do that. 12-1 against this team is not good." The season got off to a promising start for Pike Central in the first inning when ju- nior shortstop Race Britton reached on an error with one out, then advanced to sec- ond when the next batter, junior catcher Brennon Benton, was hit by a pitch. However, junior pitcher Braxton Rice grounded into a double play to end the in- ning. In the home half of the first inning, Hatch- ets right fielder Jacob Mason belted a one- out single to left field and – after pitcher Bil- ly Fleetwood popped out to Chargers junior third baseman Joey Church for the second out of the inning – stole second. Mason then scored on a double by third baseman Gage Latham to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
