B-2 Sports Wednesday, April 4, 2018 The Press-Dispatch bottom of the third inning. Mason got things start- ed by drawing a lead-off walk, but was forced out at second base on an infield grounder by Fleetwood. Then, with Latham on second and Fleetwood on third, centerfielder Mar- cus Thorne plated Fleet- wood with an infield sin- gle, extending the Hatch- ets' lead to 2-1, while Latham advanced to third. Thorne subsequently stole second base and ad- vanced to third when Ben- ton's throw sailed into cen- terfield as Latham scored, giving Washington a 3-0 lead. A fter first baseman Isaac Whitehead popped out to Britton for the sec- ond out of the inning, catcher Jaydin Pendley drove in Thorne with a bunt single, extending the Hatchets' lead to 4-0. Rice then picked Pend- ley off of first base to end the inning. Swapping positions with Rice at the start of the bot- tom of the fourth inning, Benton retired designated hitter John Rook on a fly ball to right fielder Draven Huff, then struck second baseman Wes Edwards out looking. Left fielder Danny DeVine then drew a walk and advanced to second on a bad pickoff throw by Ben - ton. A fter Mason followed with another base on balls, Fleetwood singled to left, driving in DeVine to give the Hatchets a 5 -0 lead. Latham was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Thorne drew a walk, forc- ing Mason home for a 6 -0 Washington lead. An error by junior left fielder Troy Rickard on a fly ball by Whitehead al- lowed Grant Niehaus, courtesy running for Fleet- wood, and Latham to score while Thorne advanced to third base. A fter Pendley drew a walk to load the bases, Britton came on in relief of Benton, but an error by se- nior second baseman Na- than Welch on an infield pop-up by Rook allowed Thorne and Whitehead to score, extending Washing- ton's lead to 10 -0. Then, after Edwards drew a walk to load the bases, an error by Church – who moved over from third to shortstop when Britton took the mound – allowed Pendley to score, making the score 11-0. Niehaus, pinch-hitting for Mason, subsequently drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing Rook home with the Hatchets' twelfth run. Fleetwood, the 14th bat - ter of the inning, would ground out to Welch to end the inning. The Chargers subse- quently staged a two-out rally of their own in the top of the fifth inning, when Huff reached on a single, advanced to third on a sin- gle by sophomore center- fielder Connor O'Neal, then scored on a single by Britton. However, Benton was re- tired on a pop fly that was caught by Fleetwood to end the inning – and the game. Fleetwood went the dis- tance for the Hatchets, al- lowing one run – which was earned – on five hits while striking out five and hitting one batter. Rice took the loss for Pike Central, allowing four runs – all earned – on five hits while walking two and striking out one. Benton pitched two- thirds of an inning, al- lowing seven runs – two of which were earned – on one hit while walking four and striking out one. Britton allowed one run – which was unearned – and walked two while pitching one-third of an inning. "I probably could have stuck with Braxton a lit - tle bit longer," McDonald said. "He was only at 46 pitches, and it might have changed the game a lit- tle bit. But it's good to get those other pitchers expe- rience early." "We've got to get past the mental side," McDon- ald added. "When we start 2, 6 -4.
