"It was just time," said owner Trea Curtis Mc- Candless, who is the third gener- ation of Cur- tises to own the funeral home. The funer- al home is be- lieved to have started in 1894 by Oli- ver Brenton. "The earli- est record I can find is he was there in 1894," said Curtis. Her grandfa- ther Paul Curtis started working at the funeral home in 1931 and eventu- ally bought it from Brenton in 1946. He eventually retired in 1972 and his son, Kenneth Curtis, took over. Trea started working full-time in 1984 and continued there until 1995, when Ken- neth retired and she became owner. Along the way, Trea's husband, Lawrence "Buster" McCandless, died in 2015. He was retired and helped at the funeral home. Two years later, Trea's father died on July 2, 2017, and just 24 days later, her mother, Mary Martha, died on July 26. She made arrangements to hire a licensed funeral director from Evansville and continue to operate. However, he developed health prob- lems and had to quit. When that hap- pened, Curtis said, "It is sad in some ways. . . I spent a lot of time decid- ing and thinking about it. Just de- cided it was time to quit. It isn't the same without Dad there," said Mc- Candless. She said at one time there were three funeral homes in Winslow. "It is sad to see how we remember things. It sure isn't the same." McCandless said an auction is scheduled for June 9. It will be for the funeral home, her parents' house and their belongings. She said he has sent out letters to people who had pre-arrangements, but hasn't heard from all of them. "If anyone had pre-arrangements with us, they need to transfer them to an- other facility." She said those people can reach her at 812-582-3367. Check out our website to view our long range plan, monthly program- ming and online resources. Sum- mer reading is just around the cor- ner and this year's theme is "Library Rocks." An incredible amount of fun is being planned for our summer pro- gramming. We are grateful to have re- ceived an Indiana Humanities grant to bring exciting programming that will bring Jane Austen to life for all of Pike County. On April 12, 6:30 p.m., Jane Austen will visit the Pike County Public Li- brary, Petersburg Branch, 1008 Maple Street, Petersburg to present the sto- ry of her life. Debra Ann Miller, a pro- fessional actress, vocalist and voice- over talent with over 30 years of expe- rience as a performer for live audienc- es, television and film, will portray the beloved Jane Austen delving into her personal life, childhood in Steventon, siblings, her writings and the loves and losses that shaped her life and informed her perception of the world. There will be snacks at the event, along with a question and answer ses- sion after the presentation. Visit the Petersburg Branch, of the Pike Coun- ty Public Library to sign up so we will have enough space for all to enjoy the program.
