The panting named "Gentle Meadow" is an original mouth painting by Ruth Christensen. The postcard reads "Happy Easter, Sweets! Janie Tor- mohlen." Thank you for the postcard of this mouth painting. It is lovely to see the works of different artists like those of mouth and foot painters. Also, Happy Easter to you and your family. The Winslow Patoka River is about the same, not high enough to flood, but not to the halfway full mark. Winslow had some rain on St. Pat- rick's Day real early in the morning, but most of our wintry mix came on the March 20 which was the first day of Spring. We had rain for a few hours on Monday night, but before Spring officially began on Tuesday, Winslow had a drizzle before noon, sleet around noon and snow start- To enter the Birthday Club, email your name, ad- dress, phone number and birthdate to birthdayclub@ pressdispatch.net. I would love to tell you it's because less people are using them and all forms of cigarette use are becoming obsolete, but that is not the case. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes has just taken on a new form called "JUUL - ing," which is a type of vape made by JUUL Labs. According to the manufacturer's website, its mission is to "eliminate cig- arettes by offering existing adult smok- ers with a true alternative to combus- tible cigarettes." The company says the product is not intended for minors. However, young people are using it, and medical ex- perts are concerned about the health risks. JUULing is essentially the same con- cept as vaping using an e-cigarette, but the device itself is much smaller and more discreet. The size and style can make it especially appealing to kids or others who might want to hide use of this product. Like an e-cigarette, this device needs to be charged, but the differ- ence is it can be easily plugged into a laptop or charged in a car using a USB port. Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the JUUL may easily be passed off as a flash drive and brought into homes and schools without the knowl- edge of adults. Vaping flavors like fruit medley and crème brulee may also attract a young- er market, though the manufacturer states that its products are not de- signed for anyone under the age of 21. Outside of convenience stores, these products can also be purchased online through the manufacturer. There are steps to verify the buyer's age and help prevent minors from making a pur- chase, but according to news reports, underage users are still finding ways to buy it online. Using a JUUL has to be better than smoking traditional cigarettes, right? They are made without tar and some other well-known cancer-causing chemicals used to make cigarettes, but they are not harmless. The manufacturer says one car- tridge used for a JUUL contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of standard cigarettes. The American Academy of Pediatrics says nicotine is both highly addictive and toxic. Nic- otine has been linked to nerve damage in developing teens. A newly published New York University School of Medi- cine study suggests nicotine delivered via e-cigarettes puts users at a higher risk for cancer and heart disease. JUUL products are also expen- sive. A "starter pack" purchased on- line will cost just under $50. Each time you need more cartridges it will cost about $25 for a pack of four. This is not a cheap habit (or addiction). Parents, it is important to educate yourself on the appearance of a JUUL so you know if your child has one with them. Also, it is important to have con- versations with your children about the dangers of these substances. When something doesn't look dangerous or is advertised as a safe alternative, it is easy for teens to overlook the dangers that lie beneath the surface. This column is contributed by Jordan Beach, MSW, school social worker for Youth First, Inc., a local nonprofit ded- icated to strengthening youth and fam- ilies. Youth First provides 39 Master's level social workers to 59 schools in sev- en southwestern Indiana counties. Over 60,000 youth and families per year are served by Youth First's school social work and afterschool programs that prevent substance abuse, promote healthy behav- iors, and maximize student success. CROCKPOT MAPLE BROWN SUGAR HAM By Monica Sinclair Easter is a time when many of us remember the resurrection of Christ. It is also usually a time when families gather around the dinner table to celebrate with a big meal. A very popular Easter dish is ham, so this week, I went looking for a different way to prepare a ham. With this recipe, your ham can be cooking while you and the family are at church. It will have the house smelling wonderful by the time you return home. Pair this ham with two or three side dishes and you will have a delicious meal. Happy Easter and enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 7-8 pound spiral-cut ham (bone-in or boneless) • 1 cup brown sugar • 1/2 cup maple syrup • 2 cups pineapple juice DIRECTIONS 1. Use a 6 -7 quart crock pot. Unwrap ham from wrap- per, and discard the flavor packet. Place ham in- side crock pot, flat side down. 2. Rub the brown sugar over all sides of the ham. Then pour on the maple syrup and pineapple juice. Cover and cook on low heat for 4-5 hours. 3. Baste ham with juices an hour or so before serv- ing. When cooking is done, carefully remove ham from crock pot and place on a cutting board. Let rest 15 minutes before carving Source: life-in-the-lofthouse.com MEALS IN Monica's MINUTES Share your favorite recipe! www.facebook.com/mealsinminutes Monica's Meals in Minutes PO Box 68, Petersburg, IN 47567 mealsinminutes@pressdispatch.net FACEBOOK MAIL EMAIL REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS Phillip W.
