Poplar Street, Petersburg Chargers third in race for PAC All-Sports Trophy By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School boys' athletic pro- gram currently ranks third in the annual race for the Pocket Athletic Conference all-sports trophies. Through the end of the winter sports season, the Chargers have compiled a total of 425 points after fin- ishing seventh in tennis (30 points), sixth in cross coun- try (40), first in soccer (100), seventh in football (30), fifth in wrestling (50), second in swimming and diving (85) and third in basketball (70). Heritage Hills is current- ly first in the PAC All-Sports standings with 577.5 points while Gibson Southern is second with 477.6 points. By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior third baseman Jalah Barnes belted three hits – including two doubles – and drove in three runs as the Pike Central High School softball team posted a 16 -0 season-opening victory over visiting Barr-Reeve on Thursday, March 22. A fter drawing a one-out walk in the first inning, Barnes capped a four-run second inning with a two- out run-scoring single to give the Lady Chargers a 5 - 0 lead. Barnes then doubled twice in the fourth inning – the first to lead off the frame and the second to drive in two runs – as Pike Central sent 15 batters to the plate while scoring 11 runs to take a 16 -0 lead. "I thought we did real well," said Lady Chargers head coach Rick Weisman, whose team had 15 hits, including five for extra bases. Ed Cahill photo By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School 6 -foot-5 senior forward Bry- ant Nalley received hon- orable mention accolades when the Indiana Basket- ball Coaches Association/ Subway boys' all-state teams for the 2017-18 season were announced on Thursday, March 22. Nalley, who was among 87 seniors who received honor- able mention All-State hon- ors, averaged 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists as the Chargers went 11-12. Nalley, who also received honorable mention All-State honors as a junior, end- ed his high school career with 1,260 points – the sec- ond-most in school history – and 492 rebounds. The IBCA/Subway All- State teams are selected through a process orga- nized by the Indiana Bas- ketball Coaches Associa- tion and presented by Sub- way Restaurants of Indiana. All IBCA-member head coaches have the opportu- nity to nominate top players from schools in the tradition- al regional structure of the non-class tournament for- mat. Representatives from each of the 16 regional ar- eas – plus six district repre- sentatives (two each from IHSA A Districts 1, 2 and 3) – then meet to review those nominations, vote and final- ize the selections. Subway Restaurants of In- diana is once again making a financial contribution to the IBCA Scholarship Fund as the presenting partner of the IBCA all-state teams. As part of the partnership, Sub- way will also provide plaques to Supreme 15 honorees and certificates to players receiv- ing Large School All-State, Small School All-State or honorable mention all-state recognition. Those items will be available to each re- cipient's coach at the annu- al IBCA Clinic in April, al- lowing their coach to pres- ent the award to each player. Among area players, Meh- ki Lairy of Evansville Bosse was named to the Senior Supreme 15 All-State team; Robin Duncan of Evans- ville Harrison and D'Ange- lo Ware of Evansville Bosse were named to the Senior Large School All-State team; and Sam Englert of Forest Park was named to the Se- nior Small School All-State team. Also receiving honorable mention among area seniors were Jaylin Chinn of Evans- ville Bosse; Ty Drake of Sul- livan; Brandon Fickling of South Knox; Nathan Fleenor of Evansville Harrison; Dan- iel Lusk of Forest Park; Wes Obermeier of Gibson South- ern; Dylan Penn of Evans- ville Memorial; and Glen Rouch of Boonville. Among area underclass- men, Alex Hemenway of Cas- tle was named to the Under- class Supreme 15 All-State team; Kolten Stanford of Evansville North was named to the Underclass Large School All-State team; and Paxon Bartley of Wood Me- morial, Braden Beard of Tell City and Keegan O'Neill of Barr-Reeve were named to the Underclass Small School All-State team. Receiving Underclass Honorable Mention were Murray Becher of Heri- tage Hills; Logan Carter of Evansville Mater Dei; Sam DeVault of Evansville Me- morial; Zach Dove of Princ- eton; Jared Englert of Jas- per; Gabe Gladish of Barr- Reeve; Curt Hopf of Forest Park; Colson Montgomery of Southridge; Josiah Rick - etts of North Posey; Simon Scherry of Heritage Hills; Blake Sisley of Heritage Hills; and Stephan Wilker- son of Princeton.
