Poplar Street, Petersburg as though sometimes there are rewards volunteers receive that other people just can't understand. Speaking of volunteering it seems to be harder and harder to get help with proj- ects requiring volunteer help. When I was working it was hard to volunteer but now that I'm retired it gives my life new mean- ing and it is even fun learning new things. There is still plenty of time to do all the other things you need to do. Think about it if you find yourself with some spare time. Our lesson this past Sunday was about God's grace and how to gain it. Confess with an open mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in your heart and you shall be saved and granted God's grace. There are some who think you must con- fess your sins to Jesus and there is nothing wrong with doing that but confessing Him as your savior is the key and accepting His love is the answer. There is no room for biases when considering God's Kingdom because there is no race or gender when it comes to equality because God created The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Our economy has rebounded and acts of terror- ism may soon take place again on Ameri- can soil. The liberal, secular media elect- ed many of our political leaders in Novem- ber. There seems to be a lot of confusion between right and wrong. We must never forget God's Word is unchanging. Popular Internet sites that promote sex, violence, materialism and self-gratifica- tion will only destroy the soul of our be- loved America. I am convinced that some- day history will call this a dark period in American history. The innocent lives of unborn babies face new threats and traditional family values are under attack. The atheists have awakened and God and His Word are under new at- tacks. In one recent election, poles tell us that one-third of evangelical Christians and half of all Catholics voted for candidates who favor abortion and same sex marriage. The new emerging church has a big tent for most theological ideas. Our Christian institutions often ig- nore pre-marital sex and sex perversion. Some professors feel compelled to destroy the faith of our youth. I pray for the day when people are moti- vated to be honest and family values will be honored and restored. There are some neg- ative things that are good to remember. We must never forget the Thou Shalt Nots of the Ten Commandments. The culturally elite and liberal media must understand there are millions of people in America who love God and honor traditional family values. I like peppermint. It has a refreshing taste and it can help refresh my breath, when it needs it, making it more suitable to interact in public. Peppermint also serves as an illus- tration or reminder of what we should be striv- ing to be for the Lord. Among Paul's praises of Philemon was that "the bowels of the saints are refreshed by th- ee" (Phile. 7). This precious saint had cho- sen to be like a peppermint for all the believ- ers with whom he came in contact. It's won- derful to read about this kind of testimony and what made him so refreshing to others. He demonstrated a sense of "love and faith… to- ward all saints" (v. 5). When these character- istics are present and genuine, they manifest themselves in a warmth and interest in others that is unmistakable. It will also be obvious in the tone and content of every word that comes out of one's mouth. Philemon was approachable even about sen- sitive matters. Paul felt free to be bold in ask- ing him to kindly and lovingly receive some- one (Onesimus) who had wronged him (vv. 10 -16). This quality of being approachable en- gendered a respect, closeness, and freedom in relation- ships that made Philemon a bless- ing to others. Philemon could be expected to re- spond in a correct spiritual way. Paul had "confidence"(v.21) that Philemon would do the right thing in the right way and with the right spirit. No wonder, then, that this believ- er refreshed the saints around him, including the Apostle Paul. Philemon was a grace believ- er who not only believed in grace doctrine, he lived and demonstrated grace. As we consider this godly example, we should apply these truths by asking ourselves if we truly want to be the kind of saint that is like a refreshing, spiritual peppermint. We should want to be this kind of saint! A good way to begin is by asking the Lord to help us develop the kind of Christian character that makes us refreshing to other saints: loving, approachable, and so responsive to the Scrip- tures that others can be confident in our ac- tions and reactions. If this is your prayer and heart's desire, we encourage you to look for verses in Paul's letters that will further em- power you toward becoming this kind of god- ly example. Well I've got start out with an apology to anyone who went out to the cabin porch hoping to hear caroling. This was a last minute attempt and threw together with a minimum of time to arrange it proper- ly. I would like to try again next year and hopefully have it more organized and sing- er friendly. I'm always open to suggestions so if you have any ideas that might work out for us next year feel free to get hold of me and let me know. Thanks to Si Ashley and Allen Houchins for trying to help and to my wife who waited out there on the first scheduled night. Mrs. Santa Claus deserves a big thank you for being there for the visiting children and for the love they felt from and for her. All being said the park looked great and very pretty so it was a success. Sunday evening the Pike County CA- SA had a party for the children involved. A hearty thank you to Pat Moriarty from the Jasper Marine Corps "Toys for Tots" for helping provide gifts for the children. Another organization from Indianapolis also supplied many gifts so the kids had a big time and it is so rewarding seeing a kid's face light up with a smile.
