"We have been work- ing on driving and attack- ing the goal," said Lady Chargers' head coach Er- ic Knight, whose team im- proved to 7-6. "The girls did that perfect tonight. They came off screens and looked to penetrate." However, while Pike Central totalled 33 at- tempts from the free throw line for the game, the La- dy Chargers only made 14. "As a team, we did miss 19 free throws, which is hard to swallow," Knight said. "But they kept attack- ing and getting to the rim." Kya Sullivan added eight points in the winning effort while Kya Leighty made five of eight tries from the free throw line to finish with five points. Alli Hold- er, Mallory Hunt and Hai- ley Parker tossed in four points each. Albany Ash- ley, Ashton Catt and Han- nah Woodford scored two points apiece to round out the scoring for the Lady Chargers. "All the girls played great this game," Knight said. "All of them scored and almost all of them was at the line during the game. That's something a coach loves to see." "We are starting to come together and starting to get the small things that we have been working on each practice," Knight added. In the seventh grade con- test, Chloe Williams scored a game-high 14 points to lead Pike Central to a 38 - 4 victory over Owensville. Liberty Taylor added sev- en points as the Lady Char- gers improved to 8 -6. "This game came at a good time for us," Pike Central head coach Ra- chelle Johns said. "The girls could relax and work on the things that have plagued us. They looked for their open teammates and passed much better. The subs got substantial playing time as well, which will pay off in the future." PCMS 8th grade girls' basketball team rallies for 27-22 win at Barr-Reeve Trailing host Barr-Reeve 8 -5 at halftime, the Pike Cen- tral Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team rallied for a 27-22 victory on Saturday, Dec. 16. Playing their fourth game in six days, the Lady Char- gers hit eight of 16 tries from the free throw line, turned the ball over 12 times while grabbing 26 rebounds. The host Lady Vikings, meanwhile went 4-for-15 from the free throw line, turned the ball over 14 times while grabbing 21 rebounds. "We won all three of the 'big three' – rebounds, free throws and turnovers," said Pike Central head coach Er- ic Knight, whose team im- proved to 8 -6. "The girls see now that if we win those three, we are a very tough team to beat and are really fun to watch." Barr-Reeve, trailing 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, outscored the Lady Char- gers 8 -2 in the second period to take an 8 -5 halftime lead. "It was another Satur- day morning game, and it showed the first half," Knight said. "We were not awake yet and not ready to play." However, Pike Central outscored the Lady Vikings 9 -5 in the third period to take a 14-13 lead into the fi- nal period. During the fourth quarter, the Lady Chargers hit six of eight attempts from the free throw line while holding on for the 27-22 win. "Going into halftime down against a really good team, it's always hard to bat- tle back," Knight said. "But I was so proud of these girls today. They came out in the second half and played two really great quarters." Sophie Carnahan led Pike Central in scoring, net- ting seven of her nine points during the second half. Mal- lory Hunt and Kya Sullivan added six points each. Hai- ley Parker pitched in with three points. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Chargers were Ashton Catt and Alli Holder, who netted two points and one point, re- spectively. Parker also had a team- high seven rebounds. "Hailey got the start for us tonight and played real- ly well," Knight said. "She worked hard on defense, de- flecting passes, and led the team in rebounds." Laken Trambaugh scored nine of her game-high 12 points in the fourth period to lead Barr-Reeve. Jennica Helms added seven points. "Jennica Helms could flat out play," Knight said. "We switched our defense around and put Kya Leighty on her in a box-and-one, and Kya face-guarded her the whole fourth quarter and she never touched the ball again. I am very proud of her. She played her tail off and really helped us seal the deal at the end." In the seventh grade con- test, Liberty Taylor scored seven points and Chloe Wil- liams added six points to lead Pike Central to a 21- 8 victory over Barr-Reeve. Kahle Young tossed in four points while Jaylynn Cape- hart and Delaney Welch net- ted two points each. "Four games in one week is tough, and three of those were away," said Lady Char- gers head coach Rachelle Johns, whose team improved to 9 -6 with its third consec- utive win. "They are under- standing their roles better, and making better passes and less mistakes." "Three wins in a row be- fore the holiday break is a good accomplishment," Johns added. "The team will have a few days away from basketball to be with family and friends and then return to the hardwood." Pike Central will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when the Lady Chargers will host Boonville. RESET Continued from page 1 LOSS Continued from page 1 See SWIM on 4
