DEADLINE: SEPT. 18 Two arrested on drunken driving charges after I-69 traffic stop By Andy Heuring Two people were arrested for driving while intoxicated after they were stopped for speeding on I-69. A third was arrested after he rode his AT V to the scene of an earlier ac- cident. Brian Like, 49, of 5932 N. CR 275 E., Petersburg, was arrest- ed Saturday evening for oper- ating a vehicle while intoxicat- ed after he rode an AT V from his residence to the scene of an accident on CR 275 E. Pike County Deputy Buck Seger said at 9:02 p.m. he was on the scene of an accident and Like rode up on an AT V. When Deputy Seger spoke to Like, he said he noticed he had blood- shot eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol. Like failed field sobriety tests. Deputy Seger's report stated Like admitted taking prescription drugs, along with drinking. He was transported to the Daviess Community Hos- pital, where he tested positive for opiates and Oxycodone, as well as 0.117 for blood alcohol content. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.08 percent for alcohol and op- erating a vehicle. Like was preliminarily charged with operating a ve- hicle while intoxicated. Early Monday morning, a Washington man was arrested for operating a vehicle while in- toxicated after being stopped for speeding. Javier Alexander Menendez Deras, 21, of 2679 W. CR 150 S., Washington, was stopped at the 51-mile marker on I-69 at 12:17 a.m. by Sheriff's Sgt. Dallas Killian, who said he saw Deras driving 86 mph in 70 zone. Sgt. Killian said when he talked with Deras, he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. According to his report, Deras said he had smoked marijuana before go- ing to see a movie in Evansville. He failed field sobriety tests. Sgt. Killian said Deras refused a chemical test and was prelim- inarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated (re- fusal). A Spencer teen was arrest- ed just before 10 p.m. Friday night after police stopped him for speeding at the 50 mile marker on I-69. Tanner Christian Ray, 19, of 1675 Deerhaven Ct., Spencer, was stopped by Pike County Sheriff's Deputy Jason McK- inney for driving 86 mph in a 70 mph zone. Deputy McKinney said when he talked with Ray, he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the 2012 Volvo. Deputy McKinney's report stated Ray told him he had a marijuana pipe in the glove box, some marijuana and a grinder in the truck. He also said he had smoked marijua- na about three hours earlier. Ray failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Daviess Community Hospital, where he tested positive for THC. He was transported to the Pike County Jail, where he was ar- rested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while in- toxicated, possession of mari- juana and possession of para- phernalia. Northbound I-69/SR 57 ramp closure The northbound ramp from Highway 57 to I-69 in Vander- burgh County will close on Mon- day, September 11, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation. Beginning on or around Mon- day, September 11, contractors will close the ramp onto north- bound I-69 from Northbound SR 57. During the closure, crews will perform pavement rehabil- itation and overlay of the bridge at that location. Work is expect- ed to take about a week, depend- ing upon weather conditions. During the closure, motor- ists should take the official de- tour using I-69 and Boonville- New Harmony Road. The clo- sure will be in place around the clock. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews. I-69 Master Plan open house About 30 people gathered in the Pike County Courthouse auditorium to hear a presentation on Pike County's I-69 development plan covering about 4,000 acres near the Highway 61/I-69 inter- change. Engineers and planners talked about the plans strengths and weaknesses as well as how to market those strengths. Some of the planned targeted industries include: mining and related support services, food processing and manufacturing, agricultural production, plastics and rub- ber product manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing, data processing and host- ing, furniture manufacturing, truck transportation/warehouse, non-store retailers, nursing and residential care facilities, and hospital/outpatient facilities.
