In the girls' race, senior Halley Powers placed first out of 15 total runners with a time of 22:21 while fresh- man Lauren Young placed second with a season-best time of 23:07 to lead the La- dy Chargers to a 21-35 victo- ry over North Knox. "Halley Powers and Lau- ren Young did a phenome- nal job in this race getting out in front and never look- ing back," Roach said. In addition, senior Cailey Furman placed fifth with a season-best time of 24:32; junior Lillie Pancake placed sixth with a season-best time of 24:40 ; senior Brit- tany Young placed seventh with a season-best time of 24:58; and freshman Char- lotte Dudenhoeffer placed 10th with a season-best time of 26:19. Meanwhile, junior Er- in Craig placed 11th with a season-best time of 26:31; and freshman Jenna Mey- er placed 12th with a sea- son-best time of 26:41. "We asked the girls to fo- cus less on their times to- night and more on the race and the competition of the race, too," Roach said. "Just like in the boys' race, it seemed to pay off for their times just as much as for their places. We had four re- turning runners put up their best time this year, and all three freshmen put up their best time this year." "It's a lot of fun to watch us run that confident and that relaxed and still com- pete at a higher level than our last race," Roach added. "That shows huge signs of progress made and progress yet to come." Pike County High School senior Halley Powers goes to the lead while compet- ing in a girls' cross country dual meet with North Knox on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Prides Creek Park. Powers placed first overall with a time of 21:21. Ed Ca- hill photo Powers paces Lady Chargers upperclassmen to fourth-place finish in Alan Hopewell Invitational Senior Halley Powers placed third overall as the Pike Central High School girls' cross country team fin- ished fourth in the girls' ju- nior/senior division of the Alan Hopewell Invitational hosted by Gibson Southern on Thursday, Aug. 31. Powers completed the 3.1-mile course with a sea- son-best time of 21:18 – just two seconds away from her personal record time of 21:16 set one year earlier in the same race – to finish behind Boonville senior Haley Bark- er, who placed first with a time of 19:19, and Heritage Hills junior Caitlin Lueken, who placed second with a time of 20 :45. "Halley Powers had anoth- er strong race," Pike Central head coach Josh Roach said. "She finished about 30 sec- onds behind (Lueken) and had a lead on her halfway through the race. The last time we saw Caitlin, she was about a minute ahead of Hal- ley the whole race, so that's a huge improvement." In addition: • Senior Caden Armstrong placed 16th with a season-best time of 18:06, a seven-second improvement on the 18:13 he ran in the same race as a ju- nior. • Senior Jacob Bohnert placed 47th with a person- al record time of 20 :12, best- ing his previous PR time of 20 :20. "Tonight's races made for a great way to head into the holiday weekend," Roach said. "All the kids took great to the challenge of having 20 schools in a race and had a lot of fun with the invite be- ing broken up between un- derclassmen and upperclass- men." Roach noted that two re- turning runners – Bohnert and Huff – set new PR times while 15 others, including all seven freshmen, set sea- son-best times during the event. "We had tried to take our focus off of our times while we race lately and just focus on our effort and competing to the best of our capabilities each day," Roach said. "Every- one battles through different stresses in life and no one is capable of being and giving 100 percent every day. But everyone is capable of giving 100 percent of what they do have every day. Even if they are only 70 percent one day because they may be sick or had a bad night's sleep, they are capable of giving all of that 70 percent." "That's what we have shift- ed our focus to," Roach added. "And we've been dropping our times while focusing on that." Pike Central, which hosted North Daviess, South Knox and Washington Catholic on Tuesday, Sept. 5, will partic- ipate in the Princeton Invita- tional on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and the South Knox Invita- tional on Saturday, Sept. 16.
