Andy Heuring photo PCMS softball team beats South Knox once, Southridge twice The Pike Central Mid- dle School softball team improved to 10 -3 with a 11-1 win at South Knox on Tuesday, May 9, a 13-3 win over visiting Southridge on Wednesday, May 10, and a 6 - 2 win at Southridge on Mon- day, May 15. Pike Central 11, South Knox 1 (4 in- nings) The Lady Chargers scored 11 runs off five hits, three walks and eight errors while South Knox scored its lone run on five hits and one error. Seventh graders So- phie Carnahan and Mallo- ry Hunt led Pike Central in hitting with two hits each, while eighth grader Mallo- ry Hickey had one hit. Eighth grade pitcher Ken- zie Powell went the distance for the Lady Chargers, strik- ing out four of 17 batters in four innings. In the B game, seventh grader Brynn Hillyard had two hits while seventh grad- er Avery Hunt and sixth grader Chloe Williams each had one hit as Pike Central defeated South Knox 13-7. In addition to the four hits, the Lady Chargers – who improved to 9 -1 – drew seven walks while South Knox committed five errors. Sixth grader Madelyn Fiscus started at pitcher for Pike Central and hurled one inning, allowing six earned runs on two hits while walk- ing four and striking out one of the nine batters she faced. Hillyard picked up the win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits while strik- ing out five of the eight bat- ters she faced in two in- nings. Pike Central 13, Southridge 3 (4 innings) Seventh graders Sophie Carnahan and Brynn Hill- yard combined on a four-in- nng three-hitter as the La- dy Chargers defeated visit- ing Southridge 13-3. Carnahan started and faced eight batters in two innings, allowing no hits or earned runs while striking out one. Hillyard picked up the save, facing 11 batters in two innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out one. Pike Central scored its runs off four hits, nine walks and four errors by the La- dy Raiders. Eighth grad- er Mallory Hickey and sev- enth graders Sophie Carna- han, Avery Hunt and Mallo- ry Hunt had one hit each. In the B game, sixth grad- er Chloe Williams pitched all five innings as Pike Cen- tral improved to 10 -1 with a 7-1 win over South Knox. Williams faced 17 batters in five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out 11. Williams also had two of the Lady Chargers' five hits – including a double. Sev- enth graders Brynn Hill- yard and Avery Hunt and sixth grader Alaina Sharp all added one hit each. Pike Central 6, Southridge 2 Eighth grader Kenzie Powell surrendered two unearned runs on five hits while striking out two of the 22 batters she faced over five innings as Pike Central de- feated host Southridge 6 -2. The Lady Chargers scored their runs off six hits – singles by eighth graders Mallory Hickey, Riley Mor- gan and Xia Stafford and seventh graders Hallie Bai- ley and Sophie Carnahan – and four Southridge errors. In the B game, Pike Cen- tral banged out 10 hits in a 10 -1 victory over the La- dy Raiders to improve to 11-1. Sixth graders Alaina Sharp and Chloe Williams both had a double and a single, sixth graders Tes- sa Vinnedge and Delaney Welch belted out two sin- gles each while sixth grad- er Chloe Willis tripled and sixth grader Alaina Sharp had one single. Williams pitched all five innings to pick up the win, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out eight of the 20 batters she faced. Pike Central will close out its season at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, when the Lady Chargers will host Barr-Reeve. Lady Chargers beat North Posey, Forest Park Junior pitcher Peyton Sor- gius threw a two-hit shutout as the Pike Central High School softball team rout- ed visiting North Posey 13- 0 in five innings on Tuesday, May 9. Sorgius threw 56 pitches – including 41 for strikes – while striking out five as the Lady Chargers improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Pike Central senior short- stop Madison Scott went 4-for-4 at the plate with a tri- ple, scored three runs and drove in one; junior center- fielder Shelbi Pipes went 2-for-3 and scored two runs; while Sorgius went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. North Posey fell to 10 -7 overall and 4-3 in the PAC. In the junior varsity game, a run-scoring triple by soph- omore third baseman Emi- ly Carnahan highlighted a three-run first inning as Pike Central defeated North Posey 5 -1. Emily Carnahan also added a run-scoring sin- gle in the second inning. Freshman Alizé Padgett pitched all five innings for the Lady Chargers, allowing one run – which was earned – on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Pike Central 5, Forest Park 1 Junior second base- man Audra Stone belted a run-scoring single in the first inning and added a solo home run in the seventh in- ning to lead Pike Central to a 5 -1 victory over host Forest Park on Thursday, May 11. Freshman rightfielder Lauren Vaughn went 2-for-4, scored one run and drove in two as the Lady Chargers improved to 13-4 overall and 5 -1 in the PAC. Senior short- stop Madison Scott also dou- bled and scored a run. Junior pitcher Peyton Sor- gius went the distance for Pike Central, allowing one run – which was unearned – on five hits while striking out two in seven innings. Forest Park fell to 9 -12 overall and 2-6 in the PAC with the loss. In the junior varsity game, freshman pitcher Alizé Padgett tossed a three-hit- ter as Pike Central defeat- ed Forest Park 4-0. Padgett walked one and struck out three in five innings, tossing first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 19 batters she faced. Lady Chargers to square off against Jasper in opening game of sectional tournament The Pike Central High School softball team, currently ranked 20th in Class 3A, will take on sixth-ranked Jasper in the opening round of the sec- tional tournament being hosted by the Lady Wild- cats on Monday, May 22. The first-round con- test – which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. – will be a rematch of last year's sectional championship game at Pike Central, which was won by Jasper, 3-0. As of presstime, Jasper has a won-loss record of 12-5 while Pike Central has a won-loss record of 13-5. In the other first-round contest, Princeton will take on Vincennes Lin- coln at 7:30 p.m. The winners of both first-round contests will meet in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 24, at 6 p.m. The other semifinal game, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., will match Southridge against Wash- ington. The championship game will be played at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 25. All games will be played at the Jasper High School Sports Complex, located behind the school at 1600 St. Charles St. Admission is $ 6 per session or $10 for a sea- son ticket. During the 2017 sea- son, Pike Central is 4- 0 against sectional foes, having defeated Prince- ton 9 -6, Washington 11-1, Southridge 11-0 and Vin- cennes Lincoln 7-0. A reg- ular-season game against Jasper – which was sched- uled for Tuesday, May 16 – was cancelled to allow the Lady Wildcats to make up a Big Eight Conference game against Princeton that had been rained out. As of presstime, Jasper had won all three of its previous games against sectional foes, having de- feated Southridge 6 -0, Washington 11-0 and Vin- cennes Lincoln 10 -0. Princeton, going in- to Tuesday's game against Jasper, had pre- viously won three of four games against section- al opponents, defeating Vincennes Lincoln 3- 0, Southridge 12-2 and Washington 12-2 while losing to Pike Central 9 -6. Southridge, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington are all 0 -3 against sec- tional opponents this sea- son, although Vincennes Lincoln was scheduled to play Washington on Tues- day, May 16.
