Submitted Photo Lady Charger netters drop losses to Tecumseh, Heritage Hills The Pike Central High School girls' tennis team dropped a 3-2 loss at Tecum- seh on Wednesday, May 10 and a 5 -0 loss at Heritage Hills on Thursday, May 11. With the losses, the Lady Chargers fell to 1-16 overall and 0 -8 in the Pocket Athlet- ic Conference. Pike Central placed fourth in the four-team event with seven points, trailing South Spencer (20 points), Heri- tage Hills (18) and Mount Vernon (10). At No. 1 singles, Lady Chargers sophomore Mer- edith Benson lost to South Spencer's Mallory Damin 6 - 1, 6 -0, and lost to Mount Ver- non's Emily Duckworth 6 -2, 6 -1. At No. 2 singles, Lady Chargers freshman Shelby Vaughn lost to Mount Ver- non's Bryley Harns 6 -1, 6 -1, and lost to South Spencer's Brittany Payne 6 -0, 4-6, 10 -4. At No. 3 singles, Lady Chargers junior Cass Cond- er defeated Mount Vernon's Ella Sims 7-5, 6 -1, and lost to South Spencer's Lydia Chord 6 -2, 6 -1. At No. 1 doubles, the La- dy Chargers duo of junior Kirsten Jansen and fresh- man Audrey Keepes lost to the Heritage Hills team of Sydney Rube and Caroline Guth 7-6, 6 -2, and lost to the Mount Vernon team of Cara Epley and Jackie Godinez 6 - 1, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, the Lady Chargers duo of junior Jadyn Ashby and sophomore Grace Smith lost to the South Spen- cer team of Baylee Kirch- gessner and Bailey Manis 3- 6, 6 -0, 10 -6, and lost to the Mount Vernon team of Maci Selke and Janelle Schirtzing- er 6 -3, 6 -0. "We went three sets in a couple of our matches against a pretty strong South Spen- cer team," Pike Central head coach Brent Beck said. "We play hard and are getting bet- ter. We just need to continue to improve our technique in multiple areas. This is where we sometimes like a little fo- cus. We need to work hard and smart, not just hard." The Lady Chargers will open sectional tournament play at Jasper at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, when they will take on Forest Park in a semifinal match. The winner will advance to the fi- nals – at 4:30 p.m. on Thurs- day, May 18 – against the winner of the sectional's oth- er semifinal match between Jasper and Southridge.
