SEPTEMBER 2010 – It's A Good Life First Day Of Fall The First Day of Fall will be here soon, which affords a great opportunity to stop and think about fall preven- tion – you know the “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” kind of fall prevention. Why focus on Fall Prevention? Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among adults age 65 and older. One in three Americans age 65 and older falls each year. In 2007, approximately 1.9 million older adults were treated in hospital emergency departments for fall-related injuries, and about 491,500 were subsequently hospital- ized. Older adults may volun- tarily restrict their activities due to a fear of falling, which in turn increases their risk of falling. Older adults are the fast- est growing segment of our population. The age 65 and over population will increase from 35 million in 2000 to 55 million in 2020. The total cost of fall-related injuries for adults aged 65 and older is $80.9 billion, includ- ing more than $19 billion in direct medical costs. The average hospital cost for a fall-related injury is $17,086. Death rates from injuries resulting from falls are higher for men; however women are more likely than men to sus- tain non-fatal injuries from falls, especially hip fractures. This may be due to the fact that osteoporosis is more prev- alent among women. What can you do to protect yourself and help prevent falls? Here are six tips: Make an appointment with your doctor. Begin your fall-prevention plan by making an appoint- ment with your doctor. Be prepared to answer questions such as: What medications are you taking? Make a list of your pre- scription and over-the-counter medications and supplements, or bring them with you to the appointment. Your doctor can review your medications for side effects and interactions that may increase your risk of falling. Have you fallen before? Write down the details, includ- ing when, where and how you fell. Be prepared to discuss instances when you almost fell but were caught by someone or managed to grab hold of something just in time. Could your health condi- tions cause a fall? Certain eye and ear disorders may increase your risk of falls. Be prepared to discuss your health condi- tions and how comfortable you are when you walk 2. Keep moving Physical activity can go a long way toward fall preven- tion. With your doctor’s OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi* or Sit for Fitness* — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Wear sensible shoes Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall- prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walk- ing in your stocking feet. 4. Remove Home Hazards Take a look around your home. Your living room, kitch- en, bedroom, bathroom, hall- ways and stairways may be filled with hazards. To make your home safer: Remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways. Move coffee tables, maga- zine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas. Secure loose rugs with dou- ble-faced tape, tacks or a slip- resistant backing — or remove loose rugs from your home. Repair loose, wooden floor- boards and carpeting right away. Store clothing, dishes, food and other necessities within easy reach. 14 Wii 8:30-10:30 Ceramics – 9-12 Adv.
