SEPTEMBER 2010 – It's A Good Life Older Workers Week Supplement To Shelby Shopper & Info Senior's Lifestyle Publication - Page 3 trend that will continue through the 21st century. As the population ages, older Americans will play an increasingly important role in our economy and America’s leadership in the world marketplace. National Employ Older Workers Week recognizes the vital role of older work- ers in the workforce. Senior workers are responsible, talented, experienced and qualified-- and they are a growing force in the U.S. labor market. By 2014, 41% of Americans 55 or older will be employed, making up over 21% of the U.S. labor force. The Committee on Economic Development indicates that employers rate older workers high on characteristics such as judgment, commitment to quality, attendance, and punctuality. National Employ Older Workers Week aims to increase awareness of this labor segment and develop innovative strategies to tap it. National Employ Older Workers Week also showcases the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which provides on-the-job skills training to individuals 55 or older with limited financial resources. Since its inception, SCSEP has helped over one million older Americans enter the workforce. National Employ Older Workers Week is September 19-25, 2010. It is held annually in the last full week of September, which is an excellent time for businesses/employers in Cleveland County and throughout the United States to recognize the contributions made by the older workers they employ as well as facilitating and promoting continued participation of seniors in the workforce. The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center encourages employers in our county; state and nation to carefully consider the qualifications of persons age 55 and older whose ranks are rapidly growing, when filling employment vacancies. Please remember that it is ABILITY, not age, which is a true measure of a worker’s contribution. Arriving at the age, in which a person is considered to be a senior adult, does not mean that the senior worker no longer has the skills, abilities or the attitude to be a productive employee. Current Americans age 55 and above have the attitude and work ethic alone to make them extremely valuable assets in the workplace. The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center would like to extend a huge thank you to the Older Workers who are employed by the COA/Senior Center for your continuous and on- going job well done. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping make the COA/Senior Center a Senior Center of Excellence. The theme for 2010 is “Senior Centers: Your Place to Connect….Build New Skills; Join a Community; and Stay Healthy and active. Senior Centers like the Neal Senior Center are a great place to connect: 1. People/Community There are numerous ways to connect to new people, old acquaintances and the Senior Center Community, as a whole every day at the Neal Senior Center (100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC). You will find people who have similar interests as you do through the many classes, activities and pro- grams that are offered. If you’ve lost a spouse there are support groups available filled with others who understand your loss or your separation. There are card groups galore at the Neal Senior Center if you enjoy playing cards not to mention jigsaw puzzles. Every month is filled with special activities, such as the annual Birthday Party, Pool Party, Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts, SilverArts and Senior Games, just to name a few which offer great opportunities to connect. Then there is volunteerism. Volunteering is a great way to connect not just to the Senior Center community but to the community at large. There is no better feeling of giving back and of accomplish- ment than volunteering. The Senior Center has a large variety of volunteer opportunities and is always looking for more. We currently have a great need for volunteers for Bingo and our new Consignment Shop. Another great way to meet new people is to join our Dine Around Club. The Dine Around Club usually meets on the fourth Thursday of the Month from January until October and visits areas restau- rants for some great food and fellowship. 2. Build New Skills The number one skill seniors are finding they need is how to use the computer, whether it is a desk- top or laptop. The Senior Center is your place to learn how to use a computer, the internet, e-mail and wireless connections. We have 2 desktop computers available Monday through Friday with volunteers to assist you every Monday. Got your own laptop? Bring it and we’ll help you learn to use it as well. Coming soon is a new computer class called Generations on Line to help seniors learn computer skills. It’s a very exciting program and we are looking forward to offering it for your benefit. Volunteer in the Yours and Mine Consignment Shop or Cobwebs ‘N Confetti Gift Shop and learn retail sales skills. Learn skills for the food service industry by volunteering in the Kitchen Table. There are other areas that the Senior Center can offer training and opportunities to develop marketable skills for today’s workplace. 3.
