Phil Rogers named Wells Fargo Region 8 Principal of the Year for 2024 People of almost any age can be targets for fraud and scams but the group most affected are the elderly age 60 and above. In 2022 people in the elder group reported 88,262 frauds or scams resulting in losses totaling $3.1 billion dollars. That information was shared with participants at the Rutherford County Senior Center by Eric A. Frick, Special Assistant United States Attorney for the western district of North Carolina under the U.S. Department of Justice. Reasons he gave for this age group being frequently targeted included being more likely to have assets, likely to have time and be available, likely to be polite to callers and not always tech savvy. Most scams and fraud are conducted electronically by email, text, dating services and phone calls. Some ways to protect yourself from fraud and scams is never share your personal information via phone, email or internet unless you initiated the contact to a trusted number, don't carry your social security number or PIN numbers in your purse or wallet and don't put you social security number on checks. He said it is also a good idea to get a copy of your credit report annually. Frick said a person should not be ashamed to report a fraud or scam and you can start with local law enforcement. There is also the Department of Justice National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-372-8311.
