With Us! Several hundred backpacks were transported to Logan, West Virginia, for distribution to children there for Christmas from people in Rutherford County. The annual Appalachian Christmas Outreach is sponsored annually by Baptists across the county, state and region. The Sandy Run Baptist Association (SRBP) was the sponsor for the project as churches across the association helped pack the backpacks. The backpacks were collected at the SRBP offi ce and were delivered to Logan by Cliffside Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist Church members. The backpacks included a gloves, scarves, socks, hats, pop-top canned food; a non-breakable toy, hygiene items, a child's Bible, candy and a copy of the Christmas story. "The families of Logan, West Va. were incredibly grateful last Saturday for Jesus' love extended through backpacks for the children, baby m' momma bags put together for the youngest and time spent in prayer, making bracelets and doing face decals," said Cliffside pastor Rev. Mike Elgin. "God blessed our team as well by hearing the stories of many homeless in Logan on Friday night as they gathered in a local church for a hot tea, clothes to look through and to receive a homeless mat our people had woven and sent," Elgin said. Prior to distribution, families met in Logan High School gymnasium before lining up for the backpacks, food boxes and other supplies. The Rutherford County volunteers also assisted with children's activities including face painting and making salvation bracelets. Elgin said families were lined up around the school and presented paperwork to the volunteers showing how many children were in the family and the various age categories. Debbie Sersland, women's ministry team leader at SRBA coordinated the project and helped with the distribution in Logan. Johnson is a Patient Care Technician in Mission Hospital McDowell's Operating Room. The BEE award recognizes patient care partners who go beyond extraordinary expectations. Johnson's nominator said this about her, "I call Helen the all-purpose ointment, that doesn't just solve the issues, but does it very soothingly and is gentle. If I imagine morning to evening in a typical day, she has answers for everything. Starting from schedule updates, patient updates … provider updates, who is on call. She also is an IT person, whenever new updates are to be implemented, she is there to help. She helps pre-op patients by calling them and providing them with the information they need. Our students also count on her...She never says that it's not her job. She is the most contributory person in OR in maintaining every one's morale. She celebrates all of us. We count on her and she never disappoints us. We love her, we value her. One-of-a-kind person, that is what she is. She deserves to be appreciated, nominated and awarded."
