It is natural for us to think that we are invincible. One of the fallacies of youth is the innate belief that if we try hard enough and apply enough self-will that nothing can defeat us. Not that we need to live timid lives, but sometimes we are guilty of living with a certain amount of misguided presumption. Eventually, life catches up with all of us. Whether it be an illness, a dysfunctional relationship, a personal failure or the reality of our own mortality, we will all inevitably be faced with life's challenges. Each of us have an inner desire to be in control of our circumstances, but there are times when we will feel like we are losing or even lost our grip on life. When a weakness is revealed, we have a choice. Some will stubbornly deny their weakness and be destined to self-destruction. Others will simply give up on life and live out their days in a defeated existence. The right way to face a weakness is to admit to it and give it to God. It is amazing how our perspective changes when we are willing to embrace our weakness. God will send people to help us adapt to life's new reality or to help us overcome the weakness. He also offers his enabling grace to get us through the tough times. Just remember, being willing to admit to a weakness is the fi rst step to gaining the strength to carry on.
