Except for a few weeks in 2018, I've been consistently writing something for readers on a weekly basis. Sometimes columns have been on a personal note, sometimes about my amazing nieces and nephew, my terrifi c eight great-nephews and two great-nieces; my cousins, aunt and uncles and the world's best friends. Things I've seen, places I've been, people I've met along the way, surprise birthday parties, holidays, mission trips, working in a garden and growing up with three sisters in the country with our parents have been the subject of columns. Town Council and Commissioner meetings, election days, historical elections, life changing events and unbelievable and indescribable tragedies have also been column subject matter. Oysters, the proper way to eat watermelon, having to shuck 100 dozen ears of corn in one morning and my love of tomatoes also made column subjects. I've had the pleasure of writing about people who've been sick and miraculously recovered and the heartache of remembering people who went on to glory after battling years of sickness. Calling Rutherford County home has been the subject of more columns than I can remember, as well as camping trips away from home, my fi rst airplane ride, children and adults who've made a positive impact on my life and hundreds of volunteers who give unselfi shly every day. There's been Memorial Day, Veterans Day columns, Christmas columns and Thanksgiving Day columns about parades and working in a cornfi eld all day fi nishing up just in time for our traditional Thanksgiving evening supper. My lone nephew was in the fi rst grade when he went to his fi rst coed party and I mistakenly wrote about that and worst of all, I mentioned the column to him. My only saving grace that day was offering him $5 if he would quit crying. It worked. When great-nieces and great-nephews arrived, there would be other family columns. Three nieces and their husbands welcomed twins, something to write about. I remember a column written decades ago was terribly misinterpreted. One woman who grew up in a large family came to see me one day very upset about a column I'd written about her family. Most of her siblings lived simply. They never owned a car, walked to the store and church in their community, worked on the farm making their own way and raising their food. I loved this family and fondly introduced them to some of my best friends. They were actually among the most amazing folks I'd ever met, but the sister didn't like the column and that broke my heart. Journalist Diane Sawyer was the topic of a column a long time ago when she became the fi rst female correspondent on 60 Minutes. I did a telephone interview with her in my little garage apartment, rather than the newspaper offi ce so I would not be interrupted. She was delightful of course. I saved the tape recording of our conversation and put it in a safe place — so safe I never found it. Charles Kuralt and his visit to Grandfather Mountain made for a memorable column. Other celebrity-types I had the privilege of meeting or at least being in the same place with them also made my column space — President Carter, President Obama, Vice President Gerald Ford, President George Bush and his dog Barney; Andy Griffi th, George C. Scott and his Golden Retrievers; Drew Barrymore, Daniel Keith, Sharon Gless, Tyne Daly and their co-stars from Cagney & Lacey and Ricky Nelson's big brother David Nelson were column fodder, too. Column writing for me began in 1981 after being in the newspaper business at that time 11 years. Space won't allow me to mention all the common, everyday heroes right here at home, but many columns told their stories. Marny Hendrick, my boss at the Rutherford County News (RCN) suggested he and I start writing a weekly column in 1981. I wasn't sure I wanted to do that, but he was the boss. After the sale of the RCN to Ron Paris and Bill Blair in 1994 I began writing a weekly column in The Daily Courier. Back then our columns, of course, ran on the editorial page and became a favorite part of my job. Every reporter- editor type was required to write a weekly column. Reporters were allowed only two free weeks a year from writing a column and that was that. When I began freelancing for Rutherford Weekly, column writing would become a part of my job in 2019 and that same year, I joined many other columnists in The Mountain Breeze. I discovered through a half century of writing columns, people sometimes read them and occasionally will make comments. For that reason, I'm still writing columns, even if the subject matter turns out to be "writing columns."
