Answers to Word Search Eleven current students in the Dental Assisting Program at Isothermal Community College were given a generous gift Friday. Dr. Madison Crumley, president of the North Carolina Dental Society Foundation, presented the students with a check for $16,500 to cover the cost of the remainder of the training program, which they will complete in July 2023. The students are Michaela Parton, Guadalupe Rivera, Valerie Herrera, Mikisha Akers, Madilyn Wilson, Vanessa Sorto, Zoie Lankford, Marianella Juarez, Yoshanda Moss, Haileigh Wexler, and Autumn Brown. Crumley made the presentation Friday morning at the Isothermal Polk Center in Columbus. The Dental Assisting Program is housed there and at the nearby MAHEC Dental Clinic on the campus of the St. Luke's Health System. Stacey Jenkins, director of the program, arranged the scholarship presentation. "The NCDSF has been a huge blessing to the dental assisting program at ICC. Students have been able to receive scholarships that assist them in the spring and summer semesters. This extra push from the NCDSF is what some students need to continue their progress and goal of completing the dental assisting program and starting a great career in dentistry. I want to thank the NCDSF for their support and encouragement of our program!" said Jenkins. For more information, contact Jenkins at sjenkins@isothermal.edu. The 8th Annual Rumble presented by Cultivate Climbing and the Carolina Climbers Coalition (CCC) will be held February 24-26 in Chimney Rock State Park. Chimney Rock Management works in partnership with North Carolina State Parks to manage the 1,000 acre attraction portion of Chimney Rock State Park. This section, referred to as Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park, includes the Chimney, Hickory Nut Falls, six hiking trails, gift shops, and a handful of exhibits that house the Park's animal ambassadors. Their mission is to provide elevated experiences to each guest who visits the Park, while investing in interpretive education efforts and working to lessen our negative impact on the environment. The mission of the Rumble is to have a community event that celebrates public access at Rumbling Bald, gathers the community, and raises funds for CCC's stewardship and access efforts. A portion of Rumble proceeds will go to Conserving Carolina for their access and conservation work in the greater Hickory Nut Gorge. The history of the CCC's role in climbing access at Rumbling Bald is interesting. Rumbling Bald is partially owned by Chimney Rock State Park, partially owned by the CCC, and partially private land. The CCC owns the West Side Boulders, the site of some of the most classic boulder problems in North Carolina. From 2006 to 2008, the CCC worked tirelessly with other conservation entities to protect access to this boulder fi eld. If it weren't for these efforts, it is likely that this boulder fi eld would have become a housing development. The land purchase also set the stage for stewardship and climbing access partnership with Chimney Rock State Park, also formed in 2006. The Rumble is a celebration of this hard won access at Rumbling Bald, a reminder of the grassroots power of the community, and is meant to help attract people to the region. Thanks to the Rumble and thanks to open climbing access at Rumbling Bald, climbers help increase revenue for area businesses during the winter slow season. CCC believes furthering the increase of open access to climbing areas within Hickory Nut Gorge will continue to boost the region's health and economy. This event is made possible by sponsors, and also the partnership between climbers, Chimney Rock State Park, Chimney Rock LLC, the Town of Lake Lure, and Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 300 people will visit the area in its slowest months.
