D. Biggers of Shelby as its newest Betty Jo Carpenter Symphony Scholar. Biggers, a junior at Gardner-Webb University, has been the tubist of the GWU Orchestra for four years. He also plays in the GWU Brass Quintet and Brass Choir, as well as the Marching Bull Dogs. He studies with Professor David Wulfeck . About his major, music performance and composition, and his purpose as a musician, he states: "Music is ultimately the way that I am best able to express myself and the fact that I feel music is my calling with which I seek to glorify God." He hopes to compose and perform music that "challenges the conventional." The Betty Jo Carpenter Symphony Scholars Program, named for one of its founders, is designed to provide community orchestra experience to young musicians who may have never played with a multigenerational group in a different kind of setting. At the same time, it is an avenue for the Symphony to obtain players to fi ll needed positions. The Scholarship Program is a cooperative agreement between the Symphony of Rutherford County and a selected college music major from any accredited college or university. Its purpose supports the mission of the symphony—"to serve the community through music and music education." One or more scholarships are offered annually, pending availability of funds and the availability of qualifi ed candidates. The Symphony of Rutherford County is a 501 C-3 non-profi t organization funded largely through private donations, foundations, civic organizations, and grants from the N. C. Arts Council. Performances for this spring are scheduled for Sunday, April 30 at the Foundation Performing Arts Center on the campus of Isothermal Community College and on May 12 at the POPS Amphitheater in Forest City. Biggers The NCDOT Offi ce of Civil Rights is hosting a new round of statewide Highway Construction Trade Academies through the end of April. This training provides needed skills and resources for potential career opportunities in the highway construction industry. The training targets women, minorities and other disadvantaged populations, including veterans, the disabled and residents of poorer Tier 1 counties where there is a need for such training and jobs. Each HCTA lasts about two weeks.
