The 400 free relay team of Jackie Berry, Ruby Sallee, Easton Bailey and Ella Adams placed 10th for the Chargers. "Overall, our girls team had a great season. We were close to three school records going into Sectionals and were able to break one of them by the end of the season. The girls finished their season 9 -8 with a seventh place finish in con- ference and a seventh place finish in Sectionals," said Coach Russell. Jasper won the meet with 471 points. Os- walt was on two relays that placed fourth in the sectional. Charger senior Jillian Bailey competes in the backstroke. Bailey set a new school record in the 50 freestyle during the sectional. Ridao captured the loose ball under the basket. Ridao's at- tempt hit off the rim and was rebounded by Morton. Mor- ton pushed the ball toward the goal and it went through the net however, the basket was waved off by the officials, as the release came after the horn. The Chargers ended the half down 26 -29. The Chargers inbounded the ball to start the third pe- riod and put up eight straight with contributions from Gish, Morton and both Howalds to take the lead 34-29. North Posey answered back on three baskets by Graff to go up 35 - 34. Pike Central pulled ahead again, 38 -35, with a basket by Sorgius and a tip in by Gish. North Posey closed to with- in one and went into a 1-2-2 zone hoping to slow the Char- gers down. Pike Central was patient on the possession. Al- though they could not get the ball inside, Sorgius got the pass in the left corner after a miss by Ridao and rebound by Peyton Howald. Sorgius drove the baseline to put it in for two making the score 40 -37 in fa- vor of the Chargers. Quick hands by the Vikings and sloppy play on the offen- sive end by the Chargers let the Vikings score four points and end the third quarter up 41-40. "It was a lot of unforced er- rors," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "The little things didn't matter to us to- night and that's going to come back and haunt you. I didn't think we were ready to play from the start," said Elliott. The fourth quarter opened with the Chargers in posses- sion of the ball. A three-point attempt by Ridao bounced off the rim and was rebounded by Gish who was fouled on the put back. Gish hit both from the line and Pike Central went up 42-41. The Vikings knotted the game at 44 after the teams exchanged buckets and North Posey converted one of two from the line. North Posey then ran off seven straight to go ahead 51- 44. Pike Central made up four of those points on two from the line by Gish and a deuce by Morton, who pulled down the defensive rebound and drove the court for a basket. The next 1:10 saw Pike Cen- tral put two on the board while North Posey added six to their total. The last 2:32 of the game, down by seven, the Chargers moved the ball up the court quickly hoping to capitalize on poor defense by the Vikings – that did not happen. The Vi- kings moved well to the ball and kept Pike Central from getting the ball inside. Pike Central instituted full court pressure and double teaming the ball, but North Posey beat the press and found the open man to score and keep their lead. Morton hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to close the gap to four 61-57. North Posey inbounded the ball and Schmitt was fouled by Sorgi- us putting the Vikings in the bonus with 18 seconds left. Schmitt missed the front end of the one and one and the re- bound was controlled by Mor- ton. Pike Central moved down the court and Morton put up a 15 -foot jumper that missed, but Gish's put back made the score 59 -61 with :03 left on the clock. Pike Central fouled North Posey on the inbound pass, putting the Vikings at the line for the one and one again. The Vikings missed the first attempt and the ball was re- bounded by Peyton Howald. Howald passed to Sorgius who put up a 65 -foot heave to- ward the basket, but was no good. The loss makes Pike Central's record 10 -7. "I am worried about us," said Coach Elliott when asked about his team and upcoming opponents, adding, "This was a big step back in the wrong direction. (If the players are) not ready to play and not will- ing to do the little things, you aren't going to win the game." Up next for the Chargers is the 6 -8 Tecumseh Braves. The game got off to a slow start for both teams. Char- ger Albert Whitehead, who led all Charger players with 12, started the scoring hit- ting for three with two min- utes gone in the period. Whitehead made up for the foul by hitting his second trey of the period 10 seconds later. The Chargers end the period down 9 -10. Pike Central played good defense in the first period. They demonstrated quick hands, creating tie-ups, turn- overs and rebounding well. Unfortunately, the bounces did not go their way as sev- eral shot attempts hit the rim and bounced away. The Vikings extended their lead to four with a three-point- er on their opening posses- sion of the second quarter. They moved the lead to six be- fore the Chargers came back to tie the game at 15 with a basket by Dawson and four from the charity stripe, two each by Dawson and Lane Frederick. The second period had the Charger defense con- tinuing what it started in the first. They swarmed the ball and worked well defen- sively under the basket. But as the third period started, the Chargers gave up sev- en straight points to the Vi- kings, putting the Chargers down by five. Whitehead stole the ball, went down the court and hit the basket to close the Char- ger deficit to three. The Vi- kings extended the lead again to seven and the Chargers fought back to close within two at 33-31, with contribu- tions from Frederick and Ry- an Whann with just over a 30 seconds remaining in the pe- riod. North Posey closed the period with five unanswered as they led at the end of the third quarter 38 -31. North Posey inbounded the ball to start the fourth period. Whitehead once again stole the ball, drove down the court and scored to make the score 38 -33 in favor of the Vikings, with just 11 seconds played.
