The United States entered the war on December 7, 1941 but the selective ser-vice was underway in 1940 or shortly before then. In the fi rst row Bryan Reed was coach of the team. Colored lights are focused from the corners of the room. Dallas Frederick and Mr. Harry ( Wimpy) Sim- onecht are the owners. Charles Fulcher, 16, of near Petersburg, was acci- dentally shot in the arm last Wednesday morning while climbing a fence carrying a shotgun. The flesh on the forearm was torn away but the bone was uninjured. He was first taken to the office of local physician and then to Washington hospital for treatment. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leinenbach, a son, Sunday. Marriages: Marguerite Garcia and Cpl. Marion A. Biggs, U. S. Marine Corps were married Jan. 10, at the home of the bride, in San Francisco, Calif.; Edith Hol- lenbeck and Kenneth (Boots) Robling were married, Jan. 10, in Detroit. Deaths: Nannie Liibs, widow of the late William Liibs, 73, of Petersburg, died Tuesday afternoon; Sarah E. Johnson, 80, of Winslow, died Saturday; Mahala Ad- kerson, 90, of Petersburg, died Friday; Mary Elizabeth Carithers, 72, wife of Joseph Carithers, died Wednesday; Louise Ann, stillborn daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Wehr, died Sunday after- noon; Dr. Homer Wineinger, 73, native of Dubois County, died Tuesday, Jan. 27; John W. McClellan, 78, died yes- terday, at his Glezen home. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Feb. 7, 1963 Miss Judy Kinman, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kinman of near Petersburg, was recently named to the Dean's List at Oakland City College. Miss Kinman is a Freshman and is seeking a degree in Mathematics. She is a graduate of Petersburg High School. Harry McKinney, of Oak- land City, drove his car into the path of a west bound Southern Railway train, Mon- day morning. The train was behind schedule. He didn't see the train and the train caught the left edge of the car, which bounced around into a bank. When the train was brought to a halt the crew rushed back, but could not find the driver of the car. McKinney had man- aged to make it to a nearby house, which was no one was home. He was able to call for an ambulance. He suffered fractured ribs, lacerated and bruised knee, sprained and mashed left arm and other cuts and bruises. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 Vera Nelson, Director of Pike Communities United, Inc. accepted a Corporate Match check from Tony Sims, Torch Bearer of the 1997 Petersburg Generating Station United Way Cam- paign. Designated monies from the IPL employees plus the Corporate Match totaled 38,594. Of this total $17,999.60 was designated to Pike County Agencies. A student from each of the three fifth-grade classes which graduated from the DARE program at Peters- burg Elementary recently were named the top students of the program. Each fifth grader in the DARE program also wrote a DARE essay and one was chosen as the top es- say.
