Second se- mester is well un- der way. Winter activi- ties are almost over, and spring activities are fast approaching. We have completed the fifth grade basket- ball season. We hope everyone enjoyed the season. Basketball play- ers and cheerleaders are in the process of turning in their uniforms. We recently had our sports pictures taken for the yearbook and for parents to purchase. As always, we appreciate parent and community support. Fourth grade students are beginning their an- nual science fair process. They will have incremen- tal steps to complete over the next few weeks. It is a systematic process as they learn and work through The Scientific Method. It is very im- portant for the fourth grade students to com- plete each task by the date the teacher assigns. The students will learn more, there will be less stress along the way, and the projects will be better quality if the students fol- low the protocols as the teachers assign them. It is always interesting to see the completed sci- ence fair projects. We have set the date for our spring music program. Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students will have an evening performance for the community on March 2. Each grade will have about a twen- ty-minute performance. It is refreshing to see the bright spring colors after the cold gray winter. Our regular spring pic- tures are scheduled to be taken February 28. March will kick off state testing for elemen- tary students. IREAD3 is a literacy competency assessment that third grade students take ev- ery year. The third grade students must achieve a set cut score, or they will be required to work on remedial content, and retake the assessment in summer school. Summer school is usually 2 weeks long right after the end of the regular school year. Teachers and sup- port staff will work with those students before summer school as well. This year we are going to give the assessment to second grade students too. This is a free oppor- tunity for the second grade students to test out of IREAD3 early. They will take the assessment as second graders, and if they achieve the cut score, they do not have to take it in third grade. The data will also inform the teachers for instruc- tion going into the begin- ning of third grade. This year, the IREAD3 testing window is from March 6 through March 17. Petersburg Elemen- tary staff and students look forward to seeing you soon!
