PRINCIPAL POINTS CHARGER MOMENTS From the desk of Principal Dan Ganney, MBA, Pike Central High School Pike Central High School staff and students have recent- ly completed the first quarter of the 2022/2023 school year. It seems like it was just yesterday we were welcoming students and staff back into the building. So many new faces armed with ex- citement and ideas, attempting to return to some form of normalcy. Our task for this school year is to provide a safe environment for students and staff, ensure student growth, and have fun while doing it. We accepted the challenge and so far, we are all on board and row- ing in the right direction. We will miscue at times, but resilience and purpose will get us there. Let's start with some of the amazing upgrades to our fa- cility. While nearly impossible to list them all, I'll share a few. Major renovations to our pool, new bleachers, up- grades to classrooms and both computer labs, were reno- vated to add further class space, including new desks and chairs for Ketina Bailey and Jason Roy's rooms, mechani- cal items such as air handlers, and one of my personal fa- vorites, a new wrestling room. These are just a few exam- ples that our School Board, Superintendent, Assistant Su- perintendent, and community have supported to ensure that our students have every opportunity to succeed aca- demically, socially, and emotionally. In the academic learning environment, it is essential to have a yardstick of sorts, to measure our growth. Recently our EL A and Math teachers completed their training to ad- minister the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) exam and will be administering it in the upcoming weeks. This exam will be given three times a year to measure stu- dent growth and to provide a scaffolding of support in ar- eas of need. Additional testing dates can be found on our Website for PSAT, SAT, Biology ILearn, and ASVAB. Academic growth is very important, but so is social and emotional growth, hence how we interact with other in- dividuals. We will be implementing additional interven- tions such as Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) to assist us in achieving our Family Friendly Cer- tification. If you aren't from Pike County, Indiana you probably are unaware of one of the best kept secrets about Pike Cen- tral High School, which is our Career and Technical Ed- ucation (CTE) programs, voted #1 in the state. Amazing teachers, dedicated to collaboration between departments, mentoring, listening to young minds with innovative ideas. Did I say, #1 in the state? The best kept secret needs to be recognized, these students will be creating our futures in technology, engineering, and construction. Stay tuned for our Green Team Race car and how it performs this year. Now for the fun at Pike Central High School, if you were to have taken a stroll through our hallways over the past weeks you would have felt the excitement and energy of our first pep assembly in nearly three years, doorways decorated for homeroom competition, homecoming ban- ners, lockers decorated for inspiration for our athletes and a multitude of other ways to show school spirit. It would al- most appear we are getting back to normal. This is exact- ly what high school should look like. As the holidays ap- proach, more energy and excitement will emerge creating lifelong memories for our students and staff. We are so blessed to be part of Pike Central High School and the community where our students show up and are intentional and know WHY they are here. We look forward to helping our students and staff to be the best version of themselves possible. Welcome to the principals' weekly column Each week family and friends can look forward to hearing from Pike County's school principals about the latest news and happenings within their schools.
