I got a job and have en- joyed going back to work after being re- tired. But I just got some bad news - a letter from Social Security saying I owe them $17,000 because when I went back to work, I earned more than allowed in 2021. They never mentioned that I told them I was going back to work. They now say they can't pay me benefits in 2022 be- cause I am working. Good job SSA, since I told you when I went back to work. Any- way, I can't repay them all at once, I'm lucky to buy gas to get groceries. They list items for a waiver, but I am not sure what is best for me. I was planning on moving for health reasons, but if I paid them all at once I have nothing left for the move. I just started my research on how to handle this but hoped you would have some insight. Signed: Un-retired Worker. Dear Un-retired Worker: Sorry to hear of the Overpayment Notice you have received from Social Security. Here are my thoughts: The repayment options they offered you are probably a) remit the entire amount in full or b) have your SS benefits withheld until they recover what you owe, or c) ask for special pay- ment terms because doing either of the above is a hardship. At this juncture, you can request a waiver of the Overpayment in either of two ways: · File form SSA-632, which essentially says you agree you've been overpaid but think you shouldn't be required to pay it back because it wasn't your fault (it was Social Security's fault because you notified them when you returned to work). · File form SSA-634, which essentially says you agree you've been overpaid and want to pay it back, but you can't afford to pay it back in the man- ner they've offered. I suggest you start by filing SSA-632, mainly because you no- tified them in August of 2021 that you had returned to work and they, neverthe- less, continued to pay you thus causing the overpayment themselves (see Sec- tion 3, question.12 of SSA-632). While I can't predict the probability of you having the entire amount waived, I think there's a reasonably good chance they may pro- vide you with some special accommoda- tion because the overpayment was, in- deed, a result of their own inaction af- ter you notified them you had returned to work. I suspect what happened is that they simply neglected to act after you noti- fied them, and then when they received your 2021 earnings data from the IRS, they found you had earned more than the 2021 limit, causing them to issue the Overpayment Notice. But their lack of ac- tion shouldn't result in a financial hard- ship for you, which is why I suggest you seek a waiver. Be aware too that if your waiver request is denied you have the right to appeal that denial, in- cluding requesting a hearing by an independent Adminis- trative Law Judge, or by the SS Appeals Council, or even in Federal court if desired. In any event, while your case is pending, they shouldn't require you to repay them – they should temporarily suspend the re- payment demand until your case is ad- judicated. Assuming you are still working full time, it's probable that your benefits are now suspended because your income is too high. FYI, you will later get credit for any months your benefits are suspended, which will result in your benefit amount increasing after you reach your full re- tirement age (FR A). Thus, you may be able to, over time, recover some of the SS benefits you've lost because of your earnings prior to reaching your full re- tirement age. Spiced Apple Butter. That's the scent permeating my home office. Torrents of it flickering from a three-wick wax glob in a frosted jar tinted orange. One Bic burst and I'm in ... Salem? Maybe, uh, the Finger Lakes? In the glow, my in- continent senior cat becomes a kindly kitchen woman in a prairie skirt. "Come in from the cold, child," she says, churn- ing boiled apples. Sure, it may be a dreadful weekday, bringing with it a new credit score, but the vibes are immaculate. Spiced Ap- ple Butter pours from the walls like in "The Shining." I'm mixing metaphors, but that happens on a psychedelic scent journey. This movie ends better. Instead of freezing to death, Jack Torrance gets his LIFE together, wrapping himself in an infinity scarf. Because he has a candle. Anything is possible with a fall candle, the most pow- erful candle of all the candles. Fall is the Olfactory Olympics, and we are medal- ists in soft jammies. That's three met- aphors in three paragraphs. Sniff. AH. I purchased Space and Time's Spiced Apple Butter candle from JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts, a morass of autumnal senes- cence. Having burned through my Ash- land Maple Pumpkin Butter candle from competing craft emporium Michael's, it was time for a replacement. I pondered Salted Pumpkin, which might just be a yam? Yam Candle doesn't sound entic- ing, I concur. Harvest Fig brought to mind the annual reverie of the family fig harvest! Spiked Cider, drunk. And Candy Corn, which ... pass. You're asking, can all this fake sug- ar be healthy? Scented candles do emit chemicals, but most researchers say the risk is negligible unless you're especial- ly sensitive or locked in a room burning a can- dle for days. Which, um. Moving on. American homes have enjoyed electricity for a century, and yet, here we are, turning off the little lights and straining to read our little books next to a little fire giving off little fumes of gourd. Analysts at the NPD Group noted sales of candles, reed diffusers and home scents grew by more than 20 % last year. Folks were buying more candles in 2020, too, along with self-help books and massag- ers. Consumers are locked in fortress- es, seeking apocalyptic escape, Seren- ity by Jan. Have you been to a Bath & Body Works? Bathed in the aroma of Pump- kin Pecan Waffles, of Washington's Fin- est Apple Macchiato? If that's not tempt- ing, consider a candle rooted in the tradi- tion of stoicism, a candle named Leaves. TikTok birthed a viral candle, of course. "I don't know who needs to hear this," said user lizscham. "But Target is selling a candle that smells exactly like the air on a 65 -degree day in mid-Octo- ber." She speaks of my dreams. Perhaps no one has unlocked the can- dle like Lakivia and Damarces Sharkey, a Tampa husband and wife team behind Treble and Flame. Lakivia, a nurse, was a Bath & Body Works candle fan. But when she got pregnant, she wanted a natural option. She started selling soy candles on Et- sy and — here's the part I'm obsessed with — pair- ing them with playlists designed by Damarces. Their fall candle, Novem- ber, has notes of cranber- ry, apple, clove, chestnut and cider and pairs with music from Jaden Smith and Frank Ocean. "My first degree was in psychology," said Lakiv- ia. "I know that scent and sound is all tied to mem- ory." There's a Danish word for that, one of those delicious linguistic morsels packed with meaning, like "backpfeif- engesicht," which the Germans use to describe a face begging to be slapped. Anyway, "hygge" stems from Old Norse for "hug," and it means a sensation of co- ziness and safety. The quest might look like making the apartment 66 degrees and burrito-ing in a comforter. It might look like clutching a steamy mug while Enya makes breathy noises. Or it might look like lighting up a fresh Pumpkin Banana Scone from Yan- kee Candle and letting that baby rage until you can no longer stomach any cul- tivar of winter squash. Then, it's time for Tree Farm Festival and Magical Frosted Forest. Sniff. AH. Stephanie Hayes is a columnist at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. Will our week go down as news worthy or will it be forgotten easily. I'm cer- tainly not a trend setter nor am I a person who has to be the limelight so my week will probably go down as "Oh well that was something else." I still have some wood that the folks who said they were coming back never showed. I have even offered to haul it for them. I was told their trailer was still loaded with their last load so maybe they have all they need. I noticed a house in Meadowbrook addi- tion which had wood in their yard so perhaps they could use it, I'll find out. We had a week of some free days due to the kids be- ing out of school. It wasn't a nice week for us because we were still coughing and sneezing from whatever had us. One day we did our best to put some order to our house after a week of watch- ing kids. Our grandkids are like- ly the culprits of making us feel so terrible because they are coughing and snorting just like us. We got sensible one morning and we all went to see Dr Rudolph. The kids ended with a prescription for Amoxicillian and grand- ma and I ended with a Z-pack, but the doc asked us to put off using it as long as we could because it would be better on us health wise. One of the orders we got from the doctor was to rest and stay comfortable tem- perature wise. With the beautiful weather we have been having it wasn't diffi- cult staying comfortable, but it sure was hard to just lay around and waste such beau- tiful days. I was able to exercise and walk on my treadmill for a fairly good work out. I did not do any extra exercises and my treadmill walk was sure slower than normal. A real good friend passed away last week and I felt good enough to go to her view- ing, but not good enough to stay for funeral. At the time I was still coughing like I was bringing up a lung. Rich was likely nervous enough having to do Hazel's funeral without someone in the congregation coughing wildly. We went to visit my sister at the nursing home and she was sick and having a bad day. My sister is eight years older than me and lots of people believe I was an only child because my sister lived in Texas for many years. It is just she and I left in our im- mediate family and she is get- ting worse with each day. It breaks my heart but we can only watch her be sick. I got out in the yard and mowed up a batch of leaves, but they have been replaced by a new bunch and is ready to be mowed over again. Usu- ally if I keep mowing them over as our yard turns brown, but I suppose it is suppose to be good food for your yard in the coming year. As many leaves as I have, I could make a fortune sell- ing them for fertilize. The dust from the mowing leaves doesn't do my sinuses much good though. Sunday school covered putting on the armor of God which is defensive weapons rather than offensive. It tells me that if we ask for God's protection he uses these de- fenses to keep us from falling and being abused by the Dev- il who is our enemy. In church after the normal church routine I brought this morning's message because our pastor had a hard week and needed a little assist. In our sermon it was discovered that asking Jesus for forgive- ness is the kind of work that will get you saved. We also discovered that we should wait on the Lord and gather our strength to- ward being able to take care of whatever God calls you to be. The greatest of all call- ings is being an ambassador for Jesus. Well be blessed and be a blessing. Ramblings of my mind
