Petersburg. Post- cards and notes of interest at Sweet's Column, Winslow, IN 47598. The Pato- ka River in Winslow is low and you can see the limbs stick- ing out of the water on the west side of the bridge. We ha- ven't had any rain this past week, but the temps started off in the 70s through the weekend. When a new week began the cold- ness began in the 50s with three nights of below freez- ing with frost in some areas. The winds were also strong that the weather service had to put out a Red Flag Warn- ing for two days with winds gusting up to 40 mph. Lots of sunshine that helped the cool breeze a bit warmer. The trees are loosing their leaves and now we all have leaves of tan or brown as the yard is cov- ered. Now is the time for all the kids to get a rake and rake the leaves in a pile, then when its high enough, you jump in- to them. This is also a way to mulch the leaves for flower covering or compost. Animals we have seen: a crane flying from the medi- an on I69, sea gulls on Rend Lake, many different types of horses and cats that love some attention. More Halloween decora- tions in yards have popped up in the past week and all have everyone say Ohhh and Ah- hh. Three witches and black rats on Main Street, North Street on the third block are yards full of the Halloween spirit, Third Street has witch- es hanging in trees. Princeton and Oakland City have a few decorated places. I have been talking about the fall colors and how they have changed Norm and I went out for a drive and the col- ors of the trees are awesome to see. I know its not peek sea- son, but each week the trees change all over or they start to change on the ends of the limb. They are dull at first but then the yellow and gold appear to ac- cent the white, red, burgundy, green then the pink ap- pears. As we drove we have seen the same beautiful col- ors all along Hwy 61 and 64, I69, I64, I57 South. Norm and I still think that Pike County has some of the most awesome colors of fall and like I said its not even peek season for colors. Be- sides the fall colors, in a field I saw a corn tornado begin, a few farmers were out to har- vest the beans and some corn had been harvested. The bridge replacements are down to two on I64. Wayne County and slow down signs were up. Then on I57 South the state is making it a three lane and it is done, from the South to Johnson City-Ziegler exit. North of that to Ina the bridges and median drains in their place. This highway has a lot of semi-trucks plus the people who live in the area and two lanes made it clog up. This may help the traffic flow easier. The Wabash River was lower than usual, Rend Lake was low and Little Wabash was almost empty. We meet some nice people at the rest stops and our drive was relaxing as we saw all the beauty around us. Winslow got their water ful- ly restored by Wednesday eve- ning and Winslow had lots of help from the area and to ev- eryone involved-Thank you. No water was a hindrance, but we all survived and we now have water to use. Winslow was in the Press-Dispatch and the T V stations of 7, 14, and 25 carried the breaks for three days and everyone who was involved to report what hap- pened, it was well informed of what goes wrong and it just happens to be five breaks to repair. Congrats to grandparents Les and Julie Nixon on the birth of twin granddaughters on October 12. With the Winslow Lions we were at the Open Fun Horse Show last Saturday the 15 where the weather was chilly, but the sun was hot and felt good as the wind picked up in the afternoon. Their turn- out was lower than usual, each had a great time, with the younger age group. Babies do some strange new things to scare a mom. Grace has picked up a new habit with breathing and Laura would be happier if she could stop it, but it is not constant . Grace has a new carrier that fits on Ma- ma so she can have her hands free for other items. I wish they had made this when my child grew up. The yard signs for Winslow Town Council have doubled in the corner lot with Dee and Kavin. Monday, October 24, is the meet and greet the candi- dates and we hope to be there to hear what each star has in plan for Winslow and its cit- izens who call this friendly, small town home. Evansville had a big ware- house fire that started Mon- day, Oct. 17, with strong winds the fire lasted longer than nor- mal. It is still smoldering as of Wednesday. It was so hot of a fire that some people miles away could see the smoke and the Lloyd traffic had to be detoured and Hwy 41 al- so. It was a two block by four block around West Franklin and Morton Streets. It's time to dim the lights for this week, but continue to keep an eye on family and friends; slow down and enjoy the wonders all around you, stop for school buses, wear your mask when in crowds, and a always smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week.
