Charles Kiesel will present programs in November at the Princeton Public Library. He will honor three veterans from Gibson County. Kiesel had the honor of having special knowl- edge of their service or having known them personally. Because of the records kept by his aunt Alice Kiesel, Charles has documents of the service of two of his uncles, both of whom had special assignments during World War II. Henry Kiesel was in the Army Air Force serving as the flight engineer and top turret gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator. He attended mili- tary schools in Gulfport, Miss. and in Laredo, Texas. He also attended both the Airplane and Engine Mechanic School and the Aerial Gunnery School. Kiesel assumes his having completed both mechanics and gunnery school ranking first in the gunnery school class and second in mechanical engi- neering school class, he ended up with the position of top turret gunner on the B-24 and flight engineer on the same plane. During a group bomb- ing run over the Alps moun- tains in Austria, Henry's plane was hit by enemy fire. He had to jump from the plane. In the bombing group was a plane that had cameras onboard to record damage the bombing run inflicted on the target. That plane actu- ally took a photo of the B-24 falling through the sky after being hit and it also showed Henry's parachute and Henry falling through the sky head- ing for a landing in a snow-cov- ered area of Austria. He was captured and became a POW for 14 months. Kiesel also has photocopies of postcards he wrote home to his parents in Fort Branch while he was a POW. Charles Kiesel knew Henry well as he and his father visited him many times as Charles was growing up. The presenter also knew Henry in his adult years. Charles did not know his second uncle, Frank Kiesel, personally but again because of the family history his aunt Alice kept, Charles knows a lot of his military and personal life which he will share. Frank Kiesel was a member of the 101st Airborne 907th Glider Field Artillery Battal- ion. He was killed exactly a year before Kiesel was born. He was killed when his glider with several men aboard along with artillery pieces was hit by enemy fire and crashed. He died on Sept. 19th, 1945. Another veteran, Larry Stolz, was a good friend and classmate, of Charles. He graduated from Haubstadt High School in 1963. As grade school and high school friends they shared an interest in astronomy, reading histories of World War II and sharing their interests in the begin- nings of the space program. Stolz became a F-4 Phan- tom fighter bomber pilot and served in Vietnam. That was the same plane that the Blue Angels were flying at the time. Unfortunately, he was shot down over North Viet- nam, a painful experience for his family and friends. His plane was hit by enemy fire. The plane was last seen flying up into the clouds. Later the North Vietnamese released a photo which showed Stolz's identification, pistol, flight plans and dollar bills from his and his co-pilot's pockets. That photo was published in the New York Times on Janu- ary 9, 1972. No one knew for sure if he and his co-pilot were killed or held as prisoners by the North Vietnamese. He at first was listed as missing in action. His remains were later returned to the United States. Larry's remains are buried in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Haubstadt. Charles Kiesel will also include a brief photo tour at the beginning of the presen- tation of the Indiana Military Museum in Vincennes, where both Larry Stolz and Henry Kiesel have a place of honor with displays of photos and other items from their mili- tary careers. Photo by Charles Kiesel Henry Kiesel attended the MIA/POW National Recognition Day held at South Gibson VFW Post #2714 on Friday, Sep- tember 17, 2004. The purpose of this annual event was to honor all MIA's/POW's and en- sure that their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
