Best of luck at Sectionals! 4058 S 350 West, Owensville (812) 632-0491 Titan JV football beats MV 24-14 By Cale Kalvert Star-Times Correspondent sports@sgstartimes.com The Gibson Southern Titan JV team traveled to Mount Vernon last Monday and came away with a 24-14 victory to take their record to 4-2 on the season. The Titan defense completely shut down the Wildcat rushing attack, limit- ing MV to 17 yards on 25 carries. GS fell for a bit of Wildcat trickery on a 61-yard end-around pass for a touchdown, but otherwise held the Cats to only an addi- tional 82 yards through the air with four pass break-ups and numerous pressures on the quarterback. The Titan offense performed well with 173 yards passing spread out to four receivers, with two touchdowns. In all, the Titan offense put up 242 yards of total offense on the night. To start the scoring, MV got on the board on their second drive to put the Cats up 6 -0 in the first. The Titan offense answered after returner Maddox Potts took the ensuing kickoff 32 yards and across midfield to the Wildcat 34. Quarterback Liam Bryant went right to work, hitting a diving Potts on a 26 -yard corner route to inside the 10 on the first play. Two plays later Bryant again connected with Potts for a nine- yard score to tie the game. The conversion pass to Cam Novotny was good and the Titans took the lead 8 -6 at the four-minute mark in the first frame. A fter forcing MV into a punt the Titans started their next drive from their own 15. Eight plays and 2:19 later Bryant tossed a 20 -yard pass to Novotny along the right side to get into the end zone. Along the way Bryant connected with Novotny on a 23-yard strike and also with Conor Wirey for a 27-yard catch and run. Gibson Southern forced a quick three- and-out from the Cats on their next drive and the Titans set up shop at their own 41 after the punt return from Grant Stinson. Bryant marched the offense down the field on a nine-play 59 -yard drive capped by a Thaxton five-yard run. Bryant connected with Novotny twice for 24 yards and Parsons once for a big third down pickup of 17 yards from the H-back spot. The conversion pass to Potts was good and GS extended their lead to 24-6 with 1:20 remaining in the half. The jubilation was short lived, however, when the Cats dug into their bag of tricks to complete an end-around pass to a streaking receiver for a 61-yard score on their first play of the next drive. The conversion pass was good and the Cats cut into the lead 24-14, where it stayed for the remainder of the game. STATISTICS Passing: Liam Bryant 11 for 24 for 173 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT.
